Portland State shot a school-record 70% from the field and became the first Bobcat opponent to score 96 points in the Fieldhouse in 10 years, racing past the Bobcats 96-68 on Thursday.
Guard Jeremiah Dominguez led all scorers with 26 points, including 19 in the first half. The only Viking to shoot less than 50% from the floor was reserve center J.R. Moore, who was 1-for-3.
"They just handled us," said MSU coach Brad Huse, "and we didn't show much fight, which has been kind of our trademark this year. We were disjointed, and disconnected. Credit where credit is due, they didn't miss many shots."
Portland State jumped on the Bobcats early, grabbing a 7-2 advantage. Montana State never led. The Vikings pushed its lead to 10 with a Scott Morrison dunk at 11:29 of the first half, and MSU's deficit was double digits for the final 31 minutes.
The Bobcats shot just 38% from the field, including 6-for-22 from three-point range, but Huse said much of MSU's trouble stemmed from its opponent. "A big part of it was Portland State," Huse said. "How they played, how they executed, they just made plays."
Mecklen Davis led the Bobcats with 19 points and five rebounds, while Divaldo Mbunga added 15 points. Branden Johnson scored 10.
The win gives Portland State its second Big Sky regular season title in four years, guaranteeing that the Vikings will host the Big Sky Championship Tournament March 11-12. Wins by Idaho State and Montana on Thursday mean Montana State can be seeded no higher than fifth in the league tourney, and the Bobcats will have to travel for a first round game on March 8.
