Five Student-Athletes Receive Prestigious MSU Awards of Excellence

The award is given annually to seniors at MSU who exhibit exceptional performance in academic and community leadership. Five MSU student-athletes were honored in this year’s class of 40, and it is the second year in a row that MSU student-athletes have comprised more than 10 percent of MSU’s top-achieving seniors on campus.
Don L. Brockett, Mechanical Engineering, Men’s Ski Team
Don Brockett, a captain on this year’s men’s ski team, hails from Samammish, Washington. Besides being a full-time student maintaining a 3.6 grade point average (GPA), Brockett leads a busy life on and off campus. He is a teacher assistant and tutor in the engineering department at MSU and has volunteered to work on such campus projects as Midnight Mania, Night With the Cats, Campus Clean-up Day and helps the athletic department marketing crew at home basketball games in his spare time. Off campus, he has participated in the Bozeman Clean-Up and the Adopt-A-Highway program. He is an Academic All-American, member of the MSU Mortar Board, Alpha Lamba Delta Society, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.
Elisabeth Driscoll, Mechanical Engineering/German, Women’s Track and Field/Women’s Cross Country
Elisabeth Driscoll has maintained a perfect 4.0 for four years of a double major in Business and German at MSU while running both cross country and track and field at MSU. A graduate of local Bozeman High, Driscoll participates on two MSU athletic teams; cross country and track and field. Driscoll was a three-time All Big Sky Conference selection in her four years of cross country. On campus, she also serves on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the Coaches’ Advisory Council for track and field. Driscoll has served on the One Team, a committee formed by President Gamble to review and assess recruiting policies, and has been active in the Society of Women Engineers. Driscoll was also a Brown Bag Lunch Series presenter at MSU as a result of her internship with a manufacturing company in Germany in the summer of 2007. She is active in Campus Crusade and Athletes in Action and has volunteered in the Adopt-A-Highway program, Night With the Cats, Toys for Tots, and Little Bobcat Track and Field.
Fraiser Opel, Business Accounting, Women’s Ski Team
Fraiser Opel, who hails from Kalispell, Montana, will graduate in May 2008 in the University Honors Program with Distinction. She maintains a GPA of 3.86 in business accounting and is a six-time Dean’s List achiever. Opel is a team captain on the women’s nordic ski team and was an NCAA qualifier in 2007. She is a member of SAAC and is a Business 101 Student Associate. Opel placed second in the fall 2006 Price Waterhouse Coopers xTAX Competition where she was recognized for outstanding teamwork and creative problem solving. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Off campus Opel is a Big Sister in the Bozeman area Big Brothers and Big Sisters program. In addition, she is a lifeguard and swim instructor.
Amy Plummer, Agricultural Education, Women’s Track and Field
A Kalispell, Montana native, Amy is part of the pole vault corps on the MSU Track and Field team. She is a six-time All-Academic Big Sky Conference achiever and maintains a 3.76 GPA. On campus, Amy was chair of the FFA Collegiate State Public Speaking team and is a student representative on the MSU Teaching and Learning committee. She is a member of the Lambda Delta Honor Society and has been on the Dean’s List every semester of her collegiate career. She volunteers with Little Bobcat Track and is actively involved in Campus Crusade and Athletes in Action. Off campus Plummer is chair of the State FFA National Service Project Committee, an American Degree recipient, and participated in the International Leadership Seminar for state FFA Officers in 2005. She has worked on numerous community service projects including community food drives, youth basketball, Toys for Tots, and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Bozeman High.
Karoline Teien, Business Management, Women’s Ski Team
Karoline Teien maintains a 3.91 GPA as a business management major while competing on the women’s nordic ski team. Originally from Sande, Norway, Teien can speak and write Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, and English fluently. She was awarded a scholarship to go to summer school in Russian Business in St. Petersburg, Russia in the summer of 2007. Teien has been a violinist in the Bozeman Symphony since 2004 where she plays approximately 15 concerts per year. She volunteers for the ANSA as a contact for Norwegian students at MSU organizing social events. In addition to a summer school session in Russia in the summer of 2007, she was an intern at the Starzen Company in Tokyo where she taught English to employees.
