Bobcat Women Grind-Out Win at Sacramento State

The win moved the Bobcats a half-game back of Montana and Idaho State for the top spot in the Big Sky Conference.
Montana State (12-10, 7-3) and Sacramento State (6-17, 4-7) combined for 40 turnovers, with the Bobcats forcing 17 first-half miscues by the Hornets.
Aside from Mercer, the Bobcats had a balanced attack as three other players reached double-digits.
Sophomore Jenny Heringer finished with 15 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five assists, while Sarah Strand and Erica Perry posted 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Perry, a point-guard from Lynwood, Calif., also tallied six assists and four steals.
“Sacramento State is a much improved team from the first time we faced them,” said MSU third-year head coach Tricia Binford. “It was a battle, and I’m happy with the way our kids held their composure, hit their free throws, took care of the ball, and got some stops down the stretch,”
MSU held a 61-55 advantage with 2:18 remaining, before the Bobcats finished off the game going nine-of-ten from the free throw line.
The Bobcats built a 14-point lead in the first half, and boasted a 41-28 advantage early in the second stanza.
Sacramento State whittled the margin to 55-53 with 5:55 left, but a Strand jumper and a pair of Heringer free throws pushed the cushion back to six points.
“I thought we got going pretty well in the first half,” Binford said. “However, I think they had the better second half, but again, I’m pleased with the way we finished, especially since we were hampered with foul trouble.”
Mercer and post player Nubia Garcia sat out most of the second half with four fouls, apiece.
For the game, MSU shot 44 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line, while limiting the Hornets to 40 percent from the floor and 57 percent from the charity stripe.
Sacramento State was led by Atty Boyer with 20 points and ten rebounds.
MSU will play at Northern Arizona on Friday night in Flagstaff.
