Bobcat Women Travel to Sacramento State, Northern Arizona

After hosting the University of Montana last Friday night,the Montana State women’s basketball team will begin the arduous portion of its schedule as it plays fi ve of seven Big Sky games away from the friendly confi nes of Worthington Arena. The Bobcats will break away from its traditional Thursday/Saturday slate, meeting Sacramento State, Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the Hornets Nest, and Northern Arizona, Friday, Feb. 15 in Flagstaff. Montana State is currently 11-10 overall, including winning its last three consecutive outings. Two of those victories came over the Big Sky’s uppercrust- Portland State and Montana. Last Friday, the Bobcats upended Montana 91-87 in front of 4,277 fans in Worthington Arena. Rebecca Mercer paced MSU with a career-high 32 points, while Jenny Heringer added a career-high 23 points. Sacramento State has also been one the Big Sky’s hottest programs over the past two weeks. The Hornets are 6-16 overall and 4-6 in league action. Sacramento State has won two of its last three, with the loss in OT.
‘Cat Tracks:
Montana State likes the second half. In its last three games, all victories, the Bobcats are averaging 48.3 points in the final stanza, while shooting an impressive 56 percent from the field. Against Montana, MSU scored 40 points in the first 12-minutes of the second half...Sophomore Jenny Heringer has found her game after a year hiatus due to numerous injuries. The Billings Central grad posted a career-high 23 points against the Lady Griz. Heringer has averaged 20.3 points per game, while knocking down seven three-pointers...Senior Krislyn Wallace came off the bench to record 14 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Wallace is averaging 11.8 points in Big Sky play...MSU snapped a nine-game losing streak to Montana on Friday night. The win was the first for Tricia Binford against UM during her tenure with the Bobcats.
The Week That Was:
The Montana State women’s basketball squad poured in 40 points in the first 12-minutes of the second half and hit clutch free throws down the stretch to notch a 91-87 victory over intrastate rival Montana, Friday night in front of 4,277 fans in Worthington Arena. MSU senior Rebecca Mercer, playing on two hobbled feet, recorded a career-high 32 points, hitting 10-of-22 from the field, while going six-of-12 from three-point range. Lost in the shuffle of Mercer’s out-pouring was the effort of sophomore Jenny Heringer, who for the second straight week, set a career-high with 23 points. Also in double digits were Krislyn Wallace 14, and Nubia Garcia 10. Montana State won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Griz 36-33. The Bobcats were paced under the glass by Wallace with nine rebounds. The combined 178 points is the highest total in the history of the rivalry, while MSU’s 91 points is the highest total scored by one team.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference
record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent,
while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 73 percent from the charity line, with Jenny Heringer
leading the way at 81 percent. Heringer is 21-of-24 for 88 percent in Big Sky Conference action.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats are second in the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 8.42 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 2.80 steals per outing. Perry, a native of Lynwood, Calif., is ranked 44th in the nation in steals per game.
