Nubia Garcia and Erica Perry each recorded career-highs to lift the Montana State women’s basketball team to a 75-71 win over Albany in the consolation game of the Battle at the Border Classic, hosted by the University of Texas-Pan American, Monday afternoon.
Garcia, a 6-foot 2 forward, scored a game-high 22 points, connecting on nine-of-14 from the field. Perry, a 5-foot-4 point guard, added 19 points, including a four-of-four effort from three point range.
“Erica is tough to defend, especially when she is knocking down shots in rhythm,” said Bobcat head coach Tricia Binford. “The team responded well finding the hot-hand and finding Nubia (Garcia) down low. That was the big difference in the game.”
Montana State (6-6) built a 10-point cushion in the first half, before Albany (1-11) rallied to enter intermission with a 45-41 advantage.
The Bobcats opened the second stanza with a 9-0 run that was quickly answered by nine straight points from the Great Danes. The game featured seven ties and ten lead changes.
Senior Anne Phippard hit a short jumper with 39-seconds remaining to give the Bobcats a 73-71 advantage. Albany’s Ashley Lindsay missed a layin attempt with 19-seconds left. MSU’s Sarah Strand then converted a pair of free throws to secure the victory.
“We found a way to get it done,” Binford said. “I thought we did a nice job competing. We had some toughness and were gritty. Now, we need to carry this momentum into the Big Sky Conference opener.”
For the game, the Bobcats shot 42 percent from the field, including 55 percent in the opening period. MSU also held a slim 34-31 advantage in rebounding, led by Garcia with a game-high nine boards.
Albany was paced in the loss by Britney McGee with 20 points.
Perry, who ended the game connecting on six-of-nine from the field, while adding three assists and two rebounds was named to the Battle at the Border All-Classic Team.
