Troy University relinquished the lead just once for 15-seconds in overtime but quickly regained the lead with seven unanswered points en route to an 82-78 victory over Montana State in the opening round of the Battle at the Border Classic, hosted by the University of Texas-Pan American on Sunday evening.
Montana State (5-6) sophomore Lyndi Seidensticker hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.
The Bobcats trailed 66-58 with 1:50 remaining, before an Erica Perry three-pointer, coupled by a pair of free throws from Seidensticker and Nubia Garcia, closed the margin to 66-65 with 18-seconds left.
Two free throws by Troy’s (4-7) Jacklyn Selfe with four-seconds remaining gave the Trojans a 68-65 advantage to setup Seidensticker’s trey to force an extra period.
“I thought we played a great second half,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Unfortunately, we were missing in action in the first half, and that’s something that we need to address.”
MSU shot a paltry 27 percent from the field in the opening stanza as Troy entered intermission with a 31-26 advantage.
In the second half, the Trojans built their largest margin at 52-39 with 9:46 remaining on a Donette McNair jumper. MSU outscored Troy 29-16 down the stretch.
Perry sparked MSU’s second half comeback with 14 points and four assists. The 5-foot-4 point guard led five Bobcats in double-figures. Also hitting double-digits were Anne Phippard 11, Sarah Strand 11, Garcia 11 and Seidensticker 10.
MSU was paced under the boards by Jenny Heringer with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bobcats held Troy’s leading scorer Kylie Morrissy to four points in the first half, but the native of Australia exploded for 18 second half points to notch a game-high 22.
Montana State will meet Albany in the consolation game, Monday at 4 p.m. (MST).
The Great Danes dropped a 54-49 decision to UTPA in the opening game of the tournament.
