Hot Start Paces Bobcats Past Long Beach

Bobby Howard keyed an early 19-3 run and the Bobcat bench scored 34 points, as MSU topped Long Beach State 75-61 in LBSU's Walter Pyramid on Saturday.
Howard wiped out a 6-4 49er lead a little more than three minutes into the game, then connected on a conventional three-point play and converted a pair of free throws to give MSU a 12-6 lead it would never relinquish.
"I thought we defended really well to open the game, and we converted shots early," said MSU coach Brad Huse. "The 10 guys that played all did a super job for our program tonight."
MSU led 43-32 at halftime, and after Long Beach State closed to within 43-34 to open the second half Divaldo Mbunga and Will Bynum scored four each in an 8-0 MSU run that helped MSU extend its lead. "We were getting the kind of shots we wanted," Huse said. "We did a great job making the extra pass, and we did a good job turning a good shot into a great shot."
Bynum scored 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Danny Piepoli came off the bench to score 12 points, while Cody Anderson scored 11. Divaldo Mbunga and Bobby Howard each added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Montana State shot 45% on the night, holding Long Beach State to 40% shooting. The Bobcats out-rebounded Long Beach State 44-to-29, and forced 19 turnovers while giving the ball away only 15 times.
The Bobcats stay in southern California through the weekend, playing Cal State Fullerton in Titan Gym on Monday night at 8:05 pm MT.
