The Montana State women’s basketball team will look to rebound from its disappointing two-game swing in Southern California. Last weekend, the Bobcats dropped an 85-70 decision to San Diego State and an 82-61 contest against PAC-10 foe USC. Currently, the Bobcats are 4-5 overall and have dropped five of its last seven outings. Senior Nubia Garcia continues to have an outstanding non-conference season, leading Montana State in both scoring and rebounding at 11.4 points and 8.9 boards per game. The University of Idaho is 3-6 overall, but have gone 3-3 in its last six games. Under the direction of first-year and former Idaho State head coach Jon Newlee, the Vandals have posted victories over Eastern Washington, Cal State Bakersfield and Pacific. On the season, UI is paced by Yinka Olorunnife, who averages 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State women’s basketball team dropped a pair of games on its Southern California road swing, last weekend. The Bobcats opened with an 85-70 setback at San Diego State. MSU found itself down 24-points in the first stanza, but cut the deficit in half (68-56) with 8:52 remaining in the game on a Jenny Heringer layup- but would get no closer. Senior Nubia Garcia recorded a career-high 20 points, connecting on eight-of-14 from the field. In addition, the Chihuahua, Mexico native had a team-best nine rebounds as well as two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Also reaching double-digits was Heringer with 19 points, including a three-of-four effort from long distance. For the contest, the Bobcats shot 49 percent from the floor, including 59 percent in the second stanza. On Saturday, the Bobcats dropped an 82-61 decision to USC. The Women of Troy held a commanding 51-32 advantage under the boards, and went to the free three line on 37 occasions, compared to just 20 for the Bobcats. Erica Perry sparked MSU with 11 points, four assists and four steals, while Heringer added ten points.
Dialing Long Distance:
Montana State has converted 54 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting just 33 percent from beyond the arc. Five MSU players have tallied eight treys or better on the year.- led by Jenny Heringer with 16 3-pointers, and followed by Katie Bussey 11, Sarah Strand 9, Anne Phippard 8, and Lyndi Seidensticker 8.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford’s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky in steals per game led by Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. So far this winter, MSU is averaging 8.89 per game.
‘Cat Chat:
For the third consecutive year the Montana State women’s basketball team ranked among the nation’s finest in terms of academics. After ranking fourth in the country in 2006-07, MSU again found themselves listed in the upper echelon- listed in the top 15 with an overall team cumulative grade-point average of 3.392...Aside from their achievements on the court and in the classroom, the Bobcats enjoyed success at the ticket window. Montana State posted the fourth highest increase in attendance from the previous year at the NCAA Division I level. MSU averaged 3,035 fans last winter- an increase from 1,791 in 2006-07...The Bobcats finished 2007-08 with an 18-13 record and an 11-5 Big Sky Conference slate. After upsetting Idaho State in the semifinals at the league tournament, Montana State played in its first Big Sky championship game since 2003. The Bobcats also defeated every Big Sky team last season, a feat they last accomplished in 2002-03...MSU finished the 2007-08 season ranked 27th in the nation in scoring (73.2) and 28th in free throw percentage (75.1). The Bobcats were led by senior first-team All-Big Sky performer Rebecca Mercer, who averaged 18.4 points per game and 2.69 treys. MSU returns 57 percent of its offense this season, including top returning scorer Sarah Strand, who averaged 9.7 points per game.
Montana State Player of the Week:
Junior Jenny Heringer was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against San Diego State and USC, last weekend. For the two game series, the Billings Central graduate averaged 14.5 points and 3.5 rebounds, while shooting 53 percent from the field, 50 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line. In addition, she totaled three assists and a steal. Heringer had her best outing of the weekend against San Diego State. Against the Aztecs, she notched 19 points on six-of-eight from the floor. Heringer also went three-of-four from beyond the arc and four-of-four from the free throw line.

At ISU, Newlee took the Bengals to postseason with an appearance in both the NCAA Championhips and WNIT. Currently, the Vandals are 3-6 overall. UI started the season dropping its first three contests, including a 55-36 decision to Big Sky rival Montana on Nov. 18. Last week, Idaho split a pair of games, defeating Pacific, 61-51, and losing to Washington State, 53-50. In its win over Pacific, the Vandals had three players in double-figures, led by Shaena Kuehu with 13 points and seven rebounds. On the season, UI is led by Yinka Olorunnife, a 6-foot post player from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, who is averaging a team-best 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Montana State and Idaho were old Big Sky rivals, before the Vandals left the league following the 1995-96 campaign. The last meeting between the two schools as members of the Big Sky Conference was March 1, 1996 as the Bobcats handed the Vandals a 69-52 setback in Worthington Arena. MSU holds a 27-14 advantage in the all-time series dating back to the 1974-75 season. The Bobcats won the last meeting between the teams on Nov. 9, 2007 with a 77-49 decision in Memorial Gym.

Montana State senior Nubia Garcia is off to a strong start in non-conference action leading the Bobcats in scoring and rebounding, averaging 11.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. In her last five games, Garcia has averaged 11.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing. Garcia, a 6-2 forward from Chihuahua, Mexico posted a career-high 20 points at San Diego State last week, connecting on 8-of-14 from the field. A three-time All Big Sky Conference Academic honoree, Garcia will be featured in January’s edition of CHAMPION magazine, published by the NCAA. The edition will feature NCAA student-athletes pursuing degrees in the Arts. Garcia, who is depicted in a self protrait on the cover, is majoring in photography. In addition, Garcia’s work will also be on display at the NCAA convention in Washington D. C.

A graduate of Billings Central and former Montana Gatorade Player of the Year, Heringer is averaging 10.9 points and 5.8 rebounds. A second-team all-conference selection last winter, she has been in double-digit scoring in five of MSU’s last six games. Last weekend, she averaged 14.5 points per game, while shooting 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc. In addition, Heringer is first on the team with 16 three-pointers.
