After posting a 2-1 record in its recent three-game homestand, the Montana State women’s basketball team will venture to Southern California to face San Diego State and USC. MSU concluded its homestand with a 100-62 win over Great Falls on Sunday afternoon. Senior Nubia Garcia led six Bobcat players in double-digits with 14 points. Montana State is currently 4-3 overall. San Diego State is 5-3 overall, and haven’t played a game since its 54-52 win over UC Riverside on Dec. 4 in Cox Arena. Two of the Aztecs’ losses have come to No. 1 UConn and No. 22 Iowa State. SDSU is led this season by Paris Johnson, who is averaging 14.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. USC is 4-3 overall, after dropping its last two games, including a 66-64 decision to Utah Valley- a team MSU beat in the season-opener, 94-71.

Montana State split a pair of non-conference games last weekend within the friendly confines of Worthington Arena. Despite holding a three-point lead with 2:18 remaining, the Bobcats surrendered an 11-4 run down the stretch as Boise State posted a 70-65 win over MSU on Friday night. Junior point-guard Erica Perry paced the Bobcats with a game-high 16 points, connecting on six-of-nine from the field and four-of-four from the line. Also in double-figures for MSU was Jenny Heringer with 12 points. Senior forward Nubia Garcia just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds. For the contest, the Bobcats shot 37 percent from the floor, including an icy four-of-24 (17 percent) from long distance. On Sunday, Montana State rolled to a 100-62 win over the University of Great Falls. Nubia Garcia and katie Bussey led six MSU players in double-digits with 14 points, apiece. They were followed by Lyndi Seidensticker 13, Erica Perry 13, Anne Phippard 13, and Mara Hoefer 11. Garcia notched her second double-double of the year, hauling down a game-high ten rebounds.

Montana State has converted 22 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting just 32 percent from beyond the arc. Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford’s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky in steals per game led by Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. So far this winter, MSU is averaging 9.14 per game.
‘Cat Chat:
For the second consecutive year the Montana State women’s basketball team ranked among the nation’s finest in terms of academics. After ranking fourth in the country in 2006-07, MSU again found themselves listed in the upper echelon- listed in the top 15 with an overall team cumulative grade-point average of 3.392...Aside from their achievements on the court and in the classroom, the Bobcats enjoyed success at the ticket window. Montana State posted the fourth highest increase in attendance from the previous year at the NCAA Division I level. MSU averaged 3,035 fans last winter- an increase from 1,791 in 2006-07...The Bobcats finished 2007-08 with an 18-13 record and an 11-5 Big Sky Conference slate. After upsetting Idaho State in the semifinals at the league tournament, Montana State played in its first Big Sky championship game since 2003. The Bobcats also defeated every Big Sky team last season, a feat they last accomplished in 2002-03...MSU finished the 2007-08 season ranked 27th in the nation in scoring (73.2) and 28th in free throw percentage (75.1). The Bobcats were led by senior first-team All-Big Sky performer Rebecca Mercer, who averaged 18.4 points per game and 2.69 treys. MSU returns 57 percent of its offense this season, including top returning scorer Sarah Strand, who averaged 9.7 points per game.
MSU Player of the Week:
Senior Nubia Garcia was named Montana State’s Player of the Week, after just missing her third consecutive double-double. Garcia posted nine points and 13 rebounds in MSU’s loss to Boise State. On Sunday, the Chihuahua, Mexico, native registered 14 points and ten boards. On the weekend, Garcia averaged 11.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 53 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line. In addition, she added five steals, four assists and two blocked shots. A graduate of Mountain View High School in Orem, Utah, Garcia leads the Big Sky Conference averaging 9.3 rebounds per game.
