Slow Start Dooms Bobcat Women at San Diego State

Garcia, a 6-foot-2 forward from Chihuahua, Mexico, connected on eight-of-14 from the field and chipped in a team-high nine rebounds, along with two assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
Also in double-figures for Montana State (4-4) was Jenny Heringer with 19 points on six-of-eight from the floor and a three-of-four performance from three-point range.
“I thought our second half was the best basketball we’ve played all year,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Tricia Binford. “I’m proud of the way we finished. We’ll focus on the positives and move forward.”
San Diego State (6-3) scored the first nine points of the game and built a 48-24 lead, before heading into intermission with a 48-27 cushion.
The Bobcats had 14 turnovers in the opening stanza, while shooting 39 percent from the field.
“We need to find ways to come out better,” Binford said. “I felt we were flat and defeated. We didn’t take care of the ball and that was the major difference in the first half. At halftime we talked about changing our personality, and they did a nice job in their response.”
In the second half, MSU cut the margin to 68-56 with 8:52 remaining on a Heringer layup, but would get no closer. The Bobcats outscored the Aztecs 43-37 in the final period.
For the game, the Bobcats shot 49 percent from the field, including 59 percent in the final stanza.
The Aztecs had three players with 20 or more points. SDSU was led by Paris Johnson with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Bobcats will play at USC on Saturday at 5 p.m. (MST).
