Divaldo Mbunga scored 16 points and Danny Piepoli and Branden Johnson added 14 each to lead Montana State to a 78-66 win over Great Falls on Monday.
The Argonauts led 30-28 and possessed the ball with 20 seconds left in the first half when MSU badgered Argo guard Kiethan Gregg into a 10-second backcourt call. Danny Piepoli's three-pointer on the ensuing possession to give MSU a 31-30 halftime lead, and the Bobcats' 9-2 run opening the second half gave MSU control of the game that it would not relinquish.
"We struggled to make baskets in the first half, and at the same time they made some tough ones," said MSU coach Brad Huse. "They played with a lot of confidence and played like they had nothing to lose. I'm sure they're proud of their efforts, and they should be, and at the same time there's positives that we can take from the game."
After Great Falls closed to within four on a layup by Gregg with 14:44 to play Branden Johnson and Danny Piepoli keyed a 20-5 Bobcat run with two three-pointers each. Great Falls wouldn't be within single digits again.
Rayshaun Ames led the Argos with 16 points and six rebounds, while Matt Niemeyer added 13 points and B.J. Meridyth 12.
The Bobcats head to Cheney, Wash., this weekend for a Saturday night Big Sky Conference-opening contest against Eastern Washington. Tipoff is at 8:05 pm.
