Balanced Attack Lifts Montana State Women to Exhibition win over UM Western

“We accomplished our defensive goals and I was excited with the balance in scoring as well,” said MSU fourth-year head coach Tricia Binford. “The veterans did what we needed them to do, and the newcomers did a great job getting involved in the game.”
Bussey came off the bench and connected on five-of-13 from the field, including three three-pointers. In addition, the Alamosa, Colo., native hit four free throws and added eight rebounds.
Also in double-digits were Jenny Heringer 11 and Erica Perry 10.
Heringer, who garnered second-team All Big Sky honors last winter, went five-of-11 from the floor and added seven rebounds and two steals.
Perry, who was one of the top defensive players in the Big Sky last season, had four steals, six rebounds and four assists.
“We need to be a little more patient on offense and we can do better with our shot selection,” Binford said. “I was happy to see 24 offensive boards.
“Individually, I thought Anne Phippard came in and gave us a spark,” Binford said. “She was communicating very well and that’s the leadership we need from her.”
Phippard, a senior from Kirkland, Wash., finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals.
For the game, MSU shot 42 percent from the field, including 53 percent in the opening stanza. The Bobcats held a 48-25 advantage at intermission.
Montana State owned a commanding 56-31 margin in rebounding and committed 15 turnovers, while causing 28 UM Western miscues.
The Bulldogs were led in the loss by Alysa Brown with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Montana State will open its regular-season at Utah Valley on Nov. 14 at 4:30 p.m.
