Montana State Women’s Basketball Opens 2008-09 with UM-Western Exhibition

“This will be a good chance to get the butterflies out,” said fourth-year head coach Tricia Binford. “It will be nice to get a true game under our belt with our veterans, and seeing where we can pick-up some point production with the loss of Rebecca Mercer and Krislyn Wallace.”
The Bobcats posted an 18-13 overall mark and an 11-5 ledger in Big Sky Conference action last winter, advancing to the Big Sky championship game.
MSU returns three starters in Jenny Heringer, Erica Perry and Nubia Garcia. Also starting on Saturday will be sophomore Lyndi Seidensticker and senior center Mara Hoefer.
Heringer, a guard from Billings, was a second-team All Big Sky pick after averaging 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Perry, a point-guard from Lynwood, Calif., was one of the league’s top defensive players, leading the conference in steals averaging 2.84 per contest.
Garcia, who missed the first seven games of the 2007-08 campaign with a broken collar bone, returned to the MSU line-up and averaged almost 10 points in Big Sky play.
“We have a great nucleus back and I’m confident in their ability to pick-up where we left of last season,” Binford said. “I know we have the prowess to produce a lot of points; however, where we need to make huge strides is on the defensive end of the court.”
UM-Western is 1-1 overall, defeating Northwest University, 77-54, and dropping a 79-76 overtime decision to Dickinson State. The Bulldogs are led by senior and former Bozeman High School standout Genna Rucker.
MSU will open its official 2008-09 season Nov. 14 at Utah Valley.
