Bobcat Spikers Fall in Three to Montana

For the match, Montana State (3-20, 0-13) posted a .182 attack mark, but allowed Montana (11-12, 7-6) a .270 hitting percentage.
“I thought we played hard and competed well in the first two sets,” said MSU first-year coach Sara Schaub. “Our middles did an outstanding job and I thought Meghan Albiston was very solid, as well.”
The Grizzlies opened the first set breaking away from a 7-6 advantage with an 11-4 run to push the score to 18-10. MSU closed the deficit to 21-17 on a Macy Merrell kill, but UM closed out the stanza on a Jade Roskam kill.
In the second set, the Bobcats held a 12-11 lead following a Kaytlin Van Burger winner, before UM went on a 5-1 run. MSU closed to within 23-21 on a Merrell block, but Montana closed out the set on an Amy Roberts winner.
“Our goal all season has been to split the first two sets,” Schaub said. “We had a few mental breakdowns late in both sets that cost us a shot at getting a win. We need to learn how to stay composed, yet be aggressive at the end of set.”
Montana controlled the final set, out-hitting Montana State .412 to .219.
“We played great defense in the first two sets and we had a lot of long rallies,” Schaub said. “Give Montana credit, they came out with a lot of confidence in set three and were on full-go.”
MSU was paced by Nicole Grypiuk with a match-high 12 kills. Montana State’s middle attack of Van Burger and Kyla Hendry combined for 16 kills, a .417 attack mark and four blocks.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Albiston with a match-high 16 digs. Senior Laura Viren reached double-digits as well with ten saves.
Montana was led in the win by Whitney Hobbs and Jaimie Thibeault with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Montana State will host Sacramento State Nov. 14 in Shroyer Gym.
