Bobcat Game Notes vs. NAU

Any Montana State football team wanting to test a recent hot streak can find no venue more challenging than NAU’s Walkup Skydome. The Bobcats lost 12 straight games there before winning in 2004 and ‘06. The 2008 Bobcats, having won two straight games, face an explosive NAU offense and a suffocating defense. The Lumberjacks stand 6-3 on the season, and are the second nationally-ranked squad MSU has faced this season. The Bobcats received a jolt on Tuesday when MSU coach Rob Ash announced that quarterback Cody Kempt, who started MSU's first nine games, will miss Saturday's game with a medical situation.

The thing I was impressed with is how many different guys played well, at all three levels of the defense - in the line, the linebackers, and in the secondary. We only had three critical errors in that game (defensively), which is a very low number. And the other thing I’m impressed with is how hard they played. They played with a lot of energy and emotion. Dylan Kinkelaar’s return, I think, was very important emotionally because his comeback from injury has really become a focal point of inspiration for this team. Offensively, Alex Terrien really performed well at center after Jim Verlanic went down. I think Northern Colorado’s interception really colored people’s perception of the game, but taking out that series the offense and special teams really put together decent performances.”
...the Bobcats’ offense: “Cody Kempt will undergo tests on his knee (early in the week), so we’ll see where we stand after that process. Our biggest issue offensively is that we’re getting very few explosive plays. Part of that is on the quarterback, but we haven’t been productive in that regard in the running game, either.”
...the Bobcats’ special teams: “Eric Fisher has been a very productive player, and his ability and that of the offense to keep most of Northern Colorado’s drives starting deep in their territory had a major affect on the game. Tyler Lulay returned four punts for at least 10 yards, that’s like an extra first down before we’ve snapped the ball. Those are important, positive factors that are sometimes hidden.”
...Northern Arizona: “NAU’s game against Montana is such an enigma, because they have stopped people cold defensively all year. Their rush defense has been so good. Offensively, their running backs are really good zone read runners, they run hard and have a knack for finding the hole and getting upfield. Lance Kriesien was a huge part of the game last year, he’s tough to stop running the ball and he’s a great leader and field general.”
