The Montana State women's basketball team will begin a three-game homestand when they host Western Carolina on Saturday night in Worthington Arena. The Bobcats opened the season playing three of four on the road. So far this season, MSU is 1-2 away from the friendly confines of the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse. MSU�s lone road victory was a 94-71 decision at Utah Valley. In Montana State�s only home contest to date, the Bobcats defeated NCAA Division I upstart North Dakota 85-78 on Nov. 16. The Bobcats are 2-2 on the season. Western Carolina enters Saturday�s game with a 2-2 overall ledger, as well. The Catamounts are coming off an 81-56 loss at No. 9/12 Tennessee on Tuesday night in Knoxville. WCU has posted wins over Lafayette 68-51 and Liberty 73-53, both coming in the preseason WNIT. The Catamounts opened their season with a 90-56 setback to No. 4 North Carolina. Montana State and Western Carolina have never met; however, MSU is 2-1 all-time vs the Southern Conference- 2-0 vs. UNC Greensboro, 0-1 vs. Appalachian State. WCU is picked No. 2 in its preseason poll behind Chattanooga.
That Was The Week That Was:
Montana State dropped a pair of non-conference road games last weekend. MSU opened with a 100-47 loss at Gonzaga. The Bulldogs, who are receiving Top 25 votes this week, handed the Bobcats the program�s worst ever defeat in Spokane. The 53-point loss is the most since the Bobcats dropped an 85-37 decision to No. 9 Arkansas on Jan. 5, 2002. Leading MSU in the loss was freshman Katie Bussey with a team-high 15 points, while Lyndi Seidensticker, who returned to her hometown, matched a career-high with 12 points, including a pair of three-pointers. The Bulldogs also held a commanding 67-29 advantage in rebounding. On Sunday, the Bobcats dropped a 78-66 decision at Washington State. Three MSU players reached double-figures, led by Jenny Heringer with a team-high 14 points, followed by Nubia Garcia 12, and Katie Bussey 10. MSU shot 37 percent from the field.
Dialing Long Distance:
Montana State converted 22 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting 34 percent from beyond the arc. Five MSU players have tallied four treys or better on the year.- led by Lyndi Seidensticker with six 3-pointers. Conversely, Montana State is third in the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense, limiting their opponents to just .283 from long range.
Turnin' It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford�s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with an upset win over Idaho State in the BSC semifinals, and a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky Conference in steals per game led by point guard Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. This season, the Bobcats are fourth in the league averaging 7.25 thefts per game.

For the second consecutive year the Montana State women�s basketball team ranked among the nation�s finest in terms of academics. After ranking fourth in the country in 2006-07, MSU once again found themselves listed in the upper echelon being listed in the top 15 with an overall team cumulative grade-point average of 3.392...Aside from their achievements on the court and in the classroom, the Bobcats enjoyed success at the ticket window. Montana State posted the fourth highest increase in attendance from the previous year at the NCAA Division I level. MSU averaged 3,035 fans last winter- an increase from 1,791 in 2006-07...The Bobcats finished 2007-08 with an 18-13 record and an 11-5 Big Sky Conference slate. After upsetting Idaho State in the semifinals at the league tournament, Montana State played in its first Big Sky Conference championship game since 2003. The Bobcats also defeated every Big Sky Conference team last season, a feat they last accomplished in 2002-03...MSU finished the 2007-08 season ranked 27th in the nation in scoring (73.2) and 28th in free throw percentage (75.1). The Bobcats were led by senior first-team All-Big Sky performer Rebecca Mercer, who averaged 18.4 points per game and 2.69 treys. MSU returns 57 percent of its offense this season, including top returning scorer Sarah Strand, who averaged 9.7 points per game.
Bobcat of the Week:
Freshman Katie Bussey earned her first ever Montana State Player of the Week honor for her efforts at Gonzaga and Washington State. A 5-foot-9 guard from Alamosa, Colorado, Bussey averaged 12.5 points and 1.3 rebounds and one assist per game, while shooting 37 percent (10-27) from the floor and 100 percent (4-4) from the free throw line. She also converted one-of-eight attempts from three-point range. Bussey had her best game of the weekend against Gonzaga, notching a team-high 15 points, while adding one rebounds, one assist and a steal in 26 minutes of action. Against Washington State she chipped in ten points and two rebounds.
