Bobby Howard hit a three-pointer in the last 30 seconds to force overtime and another in the extra period to lead Montana State to an 82-79 overtime victory at Oregon State on Wednesday.
The win gave MSU a thrilling win in historic Gill Coliseum for the second straight year, and allowed MSU to even its record at 2-2 on the season, with the wins coming in Big 12 (Colorado) and Pac 10 arenas. The Beavers fall to 0-4 with the loss.
"Oregon State made a lot of shots, and we had to weather that," said MSU coach Brad Huse. "Give our guys a lot of credit for competing and fighting and showing a lot of character, a lot of heart."
The Beavers led by as many as 13 in the first half and by as many as 15 in the second. OSU held an 11 point lead in the last eight minutes.
MSU triggered its comeback with defense, turning Will Bynum and Divaldo Mbunga steals into baskets in the come-from-behind effort. MSU shot 42% in the second half and 4-for-5 in the overtime period, and its 29-for-63 effort overall offset a slow shooting start. Oregon State shot 59% for the night, but MSU forced 21 Beaver turnovers, and scored 26 points off turnovers.
Will Bynum led the Bobcats with 23 points on 10-for-17 shooting, while Howard finished with 20 points.
MSU returns home for a December 1 contest against Great Falls.
