Montana State (2-2) held a 21-14 lead at the 7:12 mark of the opening period following a Jenny Heringer layup. Washington State (2-1) answered with a 19-11 run to stake a 33-32 advantage at intermission.
With the scored tied at 54-all, WSU scored ten unanswered points to take a 64-54 margin with 5:07 left. A Heringer trey, coupled with an Erica Perry jumper cut the lead to 66-61 with 4:18 remaining, but the Bobcats would get no closer down the stretch.
“I thought for the first 17-minutes of the game we dictated the play,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We had a good spark of energy and really did a nice job rebounding. However, we let up at the end of the first half and Washington State took control.”
The Cougars hit 47 percent from the field, while holding the Bobcats to 32 percent in the second half. In addition, Washington State out-rebounded Montana State 28-20 in the final stanza.
“We have to become more consistent over the course of 40 minutes,” Binford said. “The biggest lesson we learned this weekend is that we need defensive intensity from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
“That’s something that will be addressed in practice this week,” Binford added.
The Bobcats were paced in the loss by Heringer, who tallied a team-high 14 points, connecting on five-of-11 from the field. Also in double-figures was Nubia Garcia with 12 and Katie Bussey with 10.
“I thought Jenny Heringer really gave us a good effort,” Binford said. “She is our most consistent player right now, in that she is all over the final stat sheet. She really did a nice job on the boards against Washington State.”
Heringer led MSU under the glass with a team-high eight rebounds. Sarah Strand came off the bench to chip in nine points and seven rebounds.
WSU was led by April Cook with 20 points and eight rebounds.
Montana State will host Western Carolina on Nov. 29 in Worthington Arena.
