The Montana State volleyball team will make its final appearance of the 2008 campaign on the road this weekend. Montana State (3-21, 0-14) will play at Idaho State on Friday night, before traveling to Ogden, Utah where it will complete the season at Weber State on Saturday evening. The Bobcats will look to snap two streaks this week: 1) 17-match season losing streak; 2) a 34-match Big Sky Conference losing streak. Idaho State (9-19, 4-10) is coming off a pair of losses last weekend. The Bengals dropped matches to Northern Colorado (3-1) and Northern Arizona (3-2). On the season, ISU has been paced by Emily Waldron, who averages a team-best 2.56 kills per set. Weber State (19-11, 8-6) will meet Montana, before facing MSU.
The Week That Was:
The Montana State volleyball team dropped its final home match of the season, losing a 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 decision to Sacramento State in Shroyer Gym. For the match, the Hornets out-hit the Bobcats .174 to .026. Montana State was paced in the loss by Kyla Hendry with a team-high nine kills. The Nokomis, Sask., native also contributed a .167 attack mark and one block assists. Highlighting MSU’s evening was the defensive play of libero Meghan Albiston and senior Laura Viren, who notched 18 and 17 digs, respectively. Junior setter Taylor Faught dished out 21 assists and added six digs, while Kaytlin Van Burger and Nicole Grypiuk led the Bobcats at the net with two blocks, apiece.
The Scouting Report:
The Idaho State volleyball has also been eliminated from Big Sky Conference tournament play. Under the direction of first-year head coach Chad Teichert, the Bengals are 9-19 overall and 4-10 in league action. ISU has won four of its last six matches, and have won three conference matches in Reed Gym. Idaho State defeated Montana State 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 on Oct. 18 in Bozeman. Offensively, ISU has four players averaging 2.00 kills or better, led by Emily Waldron at 2.56 per outing. Defensively, the Bengals are guided by Paige Palmer at 4.53 digs per set. Weber State (19-11, 8-6) is jockeying for position in the Big Sky tournament, next weekend in Portland, Ore. The Wildcats have won five straight matches, including a pair on the road last weekend. WSU is led by Brittney Bisaillon, who averages 2.83 kills and 1.33 blocks, while hitting .354.
‘Cat Chat:
Senior Laura Viren broke into MSU’s all-time career digs list, and is currently No. 8 with 870 saves, surpassing Jenny Elliot (867), Brooke Olsen (863) and Jenny Ohnsorg (840) this fall...Kyla Hendry is ranked seventh in the Big Sky Conference averaging .88 blocks per set...Taylor Faught is listed seventh in assists per game at 8.61...libero Meghan Albiston ranks 9th in the Big Sky in digs, averaging 3.82per set. Just a sophomore, Albiston is only 151 saves from MSU’s all-time top ten.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 3-21 overall record and 1-10 home slate this fall, the Bobcats averaged 862 fans per game, which is up from the 2007 season and second best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,417 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. Montana State’s season average of 862 spectators currently ranks 43rd in the country.
Player of the Week:
For the third consecutive week, junior Kyla Hendry has been named Montana State Player of the Week. Hendry posted nine kills, a .167 attack mark and one block in MSU’s 3-0 loss to Sacramento State, last Friday. Hendry has had 16 matches this season in which her hitting percentage was above the team attack mark.
Stat of the Week:
The ‘Cats have surpassed their season attack mark average in four of the last six matches.
