Adams finished 48th overall, covering the 10-kilometer course in 31:16.1.
“Matt had his best race of the season,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “I thought our men had a pretty solid performance.”
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Patrick Casey, 53rd, 31:30.0; Dan Jackson, 72nd, 32:24.2; Devin McDowell, 79th, 32:38.4; Carly Nystuen, 81st, 32:43.0; Kelvin Daratha, 84th, 33:03.6; and Chris Baldus, 85th, 33:08.5.
“I thought Dan Jackson had a big run,” Kennedy said. “We accomplished what we were capable of achieving. We gained precious experience for the future.”
Colorado won the Mountain Region title and an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships with 42 points.
CU was followed by Northern Arizona 65, BYU 70, New Mexico 93, Air Force 173, Wyoming 182, Colorado State 211, Weber State 226, Southern Utah, 229, Utah State, 278, Montana 295, MSU 313, Texas Tech 356, New Mexico State 424, and Idaho State 451.
NAU’s David McNeill won the individual title in 29:18.3.
The Montana State women’s squad finished 18th overall.
Freshman Heather Haug of Livingston guided the Bobcats, placing 76th overall in 22:22.4.
She was followed by Kala Jauquet, 79th, 22:24.9; Rebecca Sorenson, 84th, 22:33.5; Morgan Dunley, 106th, 23:22.9; Lauren Kuennen, 107th, 23:23.9; Brooke Chavez, 111th, 23:29.3; and Katie Gilboy, 124th, 24:48.6.
“We had an uncharacteristic day,” Kennedy said. “For the first time this year, we got split up and we’re too spread out. We came undone, and for the first time weren’t inside our customary 30-second split from No. 1-5.
“We’ll use this as a tremendous learning experience, especially since a lot of our kids hadn’t run at the distance, or experienced the quality of the field,” Kennedy said. “We’ll get back together, and will start building for next year.”
Texas Tech won the women’s team title behind the effort of two-time All America Sally Kipyego, who finished first in a clocking of 19:31.9.
