The victory snapped Utah Valley’s 15-game home court winning streak.
“What I’m most excited about is our tremendous balance in scoring,” said fourth-year Bobcat head coach Tricia Binford. “It is nice to get production from any spot on the floor.”
Also recording double-digits for the Bobcats were Nubia Garcia 14, Katie Bussey 13, Jenny Heringer 12, and Anne Phippard 10.
Utah Valley (0-1) jumped out to an early 8-2 run at the 18-minute mark of the opening stanza, before Montana State (1-0) answered with a 19-4 run to stake a 21-12 advantage on a Perry jumper.
The Wolverines established a 34-33 margin with 3:23 remaining in the half, before the Bobcats closed out the first period with six straight points to enter intermission with a 39-34 advantage.
UVU opened the second stanza on an 11-0 run to hold a 45-39 cushion. Strand’s jumper ended the run and ignited the Bobcat offense.
With 15:07 remaining in the game and Utah Valley holding a two-point lead, Montana State rattled off 30-14 run over the next ten minutes to take a commanding 75-61 advantage.
MSU built its largest lead at 24 points with under a minute left in the contest.
“In the first half we turned the ball over too much, and didn’t value our possessions,” Binford said. “We did a much better job in the second half and didn’t force the play. We were able to get a lot of open looks.”
For the game, Montana State shot 51 percent from the field and 44 percent (7-16) from three-point range.
The Bobcats also held a 46-32 advantage in rebounding, led by Heringer who posted a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Nubia Garcia, who graduated from Orem’s Mountain View High School, also added nine rebounds, while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor in her homecoming.
Perry, one of the top defender’s in the Big Sky Conference, posted two steals and added a game-high six assists.
Utah Valley was paced by Robyn Fairbanks with 31 points and 13 rebounds.
“Although I was happy with what we did offensively, we didn’t hold Utah Valley to our goal” Binford said. “Defensively, we have a lot of ground to make up.”
Montana State will host North Dakota on Sunday at 2 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
