The MSU women placed sixth as a team.
“For a freshman, Patrick Casey gave us a great effort,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “I thought he might squeak out at top ten finish, but he ran out of steam at the end.”
Casey covered the 8-kilometer course in 24:19.2. Also contributing for MSU were Matt Adams, 21st, 24:46.9; Devin McDowell, 26th, 25:01.8; Kelvin Daratha, 27th, 25:03.1; Dan Jackson, 34th, 25:24.0; Carl Nystuen, 39th, 25:46.2; Chris Baldus, 40th, 25:48.1; and Forrest Jarvi, 54th, 26:29.6.
“Matt Adams, for not running much this fall, really came through with a strong performance,” Kennedy said. “Devin McDowell and Kelvin Daratha also gave a great effort. I thought that was the best race Daratha’s had in his career.
“We did accomplish our goal of getting five kids in the top half of the field, and that’s something we’ll build on,” Kennedy said.
Northern Arizona won the men’s team title with 19 points led by David McNeill who captured in the individual crown in 23:20.0
The Lumberjacks were followed by Weber State 65, Eastern Washington 105, Montana 108, MSU 119, Sacramento State 137, Idaho State 184, Portland State 238, and Northern Colorado 256.
Freshman Rebecca Sorenson guided the Bobcat women, placing 22nd overall covering the 5-kilometer course in 18:03.7.
“It was the second straight race in which Rebecca has paced us,” Kennedy said. “She is establishing herself as our front-runner.”
Also finishing for Montana State were Kala Jauquet, 25th, 18:16.5; Heather Haug, 26th, 18:17.7; Lauren Kuennen, 27th, 18:22.3; Morgan Dunley, 34th, 18:34.4; Brooke Chavez, 41st, 18:49.1; Corrine Malcolm, 51st, 19:17.8; and Katie Gilboy, 58th, 19:50.9.
“Like the men’s team, we placed five women in the top half of the field, which was a goal of ours,” Kennedy said. “Collectively, this was our best race of the season, and obviously we wanted to finish higher. I thought our performance shows that we have a bright future.”
Northern Arizona won the women’s team title led by individual champion Veronica Pohl, who covered the course in 17:03.1.
The Lumberjacks posted 31 points, followed by Sacramento State 59, Weber State 63, Idaho State 107, Montana 121, MSU 134, Eastern Washington 206, Portland State 214, and Northern Colorado 221.
