Retoriano saves the day

Montana State was leading 13-7 late in the fourth quarter, but Northern Colorado was threatening to score the game-winning touchdown. That’s when Retoriano scooped a pass off his shoe tops and returned the interception 64 yards to give the Bobcats a 20-7 win on Saturday afternoon.
The victory ended a Bobcat string of four straight home Big Sky Conference losses and erased the memory of the 16-13 bitter loss at UNC last season. MSU improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
The interception was Retoriano’s second of the game. The junior safety also kept the Bears out of the end zone when he stepped in front of a pass attempt by UNC’s Bryan Waggener at the MSU 9-yard line in the third quarter.
Overall, the Bobcats picked off four Waggener passes. Jeff Price’s interception deep in UNC territory in the third quarter set up a 16-yard scoring run by Demetrius Crawford that gave the Bobcats a 13-0 lead early in the third quarter. Ramon Lewis’ late interception finished off the Bears.
The Bobcats also got two long field goals from Jason Cunningham. He opened the scoring with a 52-yard kick in the first quarter and added another field goal in the second quarter from 34 yards out. Cunningham, a freshman, now has five field goals of 40 or more yards this season.
Crawford rushed for 100 yards, his second straight game over the century mark. He now has 1,632 career yards, right behind Bob Wilkinson who is 10th on the MSU career list with 1,638 yards.
UNC’s lone score came in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard burst by David Woods. That play was set up by a 79-yard interception return by Joe Kenney. It was the 13th straight game the Bobcats have turned the ball over.
Cody Kempt, who tossed the interception, completed 9 of 19 passes, but didn’t return after Kenney’s long return. Mark Iddins finished the game, completing one of two passes for 12 yards.
UNC had better stats, gaining 251 overall yards to MSU’s 244. The Bears also had a 16-13 lead in first downs, but two missed field goals kept them from closing the scoring gap. UNC drops to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in league play, heading into next Saturday’s home game against Eastern Washington.
MSU travels to Northern Arizona next week.
