Montana State Spikers Fall in Three

PSU’s win, coupled with an Eastern Washington loss, propelled the Vikings into sole possession of second place in the Big Sky Conference.
Montana State (3-18, 0-11) gave up a 10-0 Portland State (15-6, 8-3) run in the opening stanza en route to an 11-point win in the first set. For the game, the Vikings out-hit the Bobcats .458 to .000.
Despite MSU’s improved hitting over the next two sets, it couldn’t match PSU’s offense, which ended the night hitting .351 overall.
The Bobcat offense was paced by middle blockers Kyla Hendry and Kaytlin Van Burger, who tallied nine kills, apiece. In addition, the duo combined for five blocks.
“We did a nice job establishing our middles,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “I’m pleased with their effort.
“We gave up big runs and the really hurt us,” Schaub said. “That’s an area we need to improve. We have to focus on what’s happening on our side of the net.”
Defensively, Laura Viren and Meghan Albiston led Montana State with ten and nine digs, respectively. Junior setter Taylor Faught finished the match dishing out 23 assists.
Portland State was guided by Jennifer Oney with 14 kills and a .478 attack mark.
Montana State will host Eastern Washington on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
