Montana State Offense Clicks Before Falling to Grizzly Spikers

“Our offense has struggled the past few weeks,” said MSU first-year head coach Sara Schaub. “However, we came out on fire in the first set and I was really proud of the way our kids competed.”
Montana State (3-12, 0-5), who hit a combined .044 last weekend, out-hit Montana (7-8, 3-2) .360 to .212 in the opening stanza. However, service errors proved to be MSU’s nemesis and kept UM in the game.
The Grizzlies opened the first set taking a 15-10 lead, before the Bobcats rattled off a 9-3 run to stake a 19-18 advantage following a UM hitting error. Montana built a 23-21 cushion, before MSU’s Jodeen Rademacher’s kill evened the score at 24-all. A MSU service error, coupled by a Jaimie Thibeault kill ended the set.
“The first set could’ve gone either way,” Schaub said. “Unfortunately, it was our miscues that accounted for the score.”
Game two was all UM as the Bobcats went .065 from the floor.
In the final stanza, Montana got out to a quick start. MSU closed the deficit to 21-18 in the waning moments, but a Laura Viren hitting error ended the contest.
“We will come away from the match knowing we can play with anyone in the Big Sky if we can keep our mistakes at a minimum,” Schaub said. “We’ll continue to work on becoming more consistent over an extended period of time.”
MSU was led in the loss by Rademacher with eight kills, a .357 attack mark and eight digs. Junior Taylor Faught dished out 23 assists, while Meghan Albiston added seven digs. For the game, UM out-hit MSU .205 to .106
Montana was paced by Amy Roberts with eight kills and three digs.
The Bobcats will finish its four-match road trip at Sacramento State next Saturday.
