The Montana State volleyball team will play four of its last six matches within the friendly confines of Shroyer Gym beginning this weekend against Portland State and Eastern Washington. The Bobcat are currently 3-17 overall and 0-10 in Big Sky play. MSU will look to snap its current 13-match, and 30-match Big Sky losing streaks this weekend. Portland State and Eastern Washington are tied for second place in the Big Sky Conference with 7-3 records. PSU is 14-6 overalll, while EWU, who plays at Montana on Thursday, is 12-9.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a pair of Big Sky Conference road matches last weekend. Montana State opened play with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-10 setback at league-leading Northern Colorado on Thursday. The Bobcats opened the match hitting a red-hot .364 from the field; however, MSU hit .000 in sets two and three. For the night, Montana State posted a .128 attack mark. The Bobcats were paced in the loss by Nicole Grypiuk with nine kills and Laura Viren with eight kills. On Saturday, MSU lost a 25-11, 25-19, 25-20 decision to Northern Arizona. Laura Viren led Montana State with eight kills, a .294 attack mark, 13 digs and four blocks.
The Scouting Report:
The Portland State volleyball team is 14-6 overall and 7-3 in Big Sky Conference action. The Vikings won the Big Sky regular-season title last fall, and will host 2008 league tournament on Nov. 28-29. Earlier this season, PSU handed MSU a 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 setback in Portland. On the year, the Vikings are led by Marija Vojnovic, who averages 2.70 kills and 2.96 digs per set. In addition, Nique Fradella is dishing out 10.14 assists per game. Defensively, PSU is led by Jalen Pendon, who averages 5.01 digs per set. Eastern Washington is 12-9 overall and 7-3 Big Sky action. EWU will play at Montana on Thursday night. The Eagles defeated the Bobcats 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 earlier this season. Haley Hills leads EWU at 4.44 kps.
‘Cat Chat:
Senior Laura Viren is 17 digs shy of breaking into MSU’s all-time top ten for career digs. She currently has 823 career saves, just shy of Jenny Ohnsorg’s (1992-95) mark of 840 digs...Kaytlin Van Burger and Kyla Hendry are ranked 8th and 9th, respectively, in Big Sky blocks per game...Meghan Albiston is 10th in the league, averaging 3.36 saves per set.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 1-27 overall record and 0-12 home slate last fall, the Bobcats averaged 840 fans per game, which was the best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,287 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. This year, MSU is averaging 844 fans per match, which ranks 39th in the nation.
Player of the Week:
Senior Laura Viren was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts at Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona. For the weekend, Viren totaled 16 kills (2.67 kps) and 17 digs (2.83 dpgs). In addition, the Prior Lake, Minn., native posted five blocks, including a team-high four block assists against Northern Arizona.
Stat of the Week:
Montana State hit .125 from the field last weekend, it’s best back-to-back matches of the year.
