The Montana State volleyball squad enjoyed a brief home-stand last weekend, but head out onto the Big Sky Conference road, again, this week. The Bobcats will face league-leading Northern Colorado on Thursday night in Greeley, before meeting Northern Arizona on Saturday evening in Flagstaff. Last weekend, MSU snapped a 14 set losing streak winning its first game against Weber State. However, the Wildcats responded with a 3-1 victory. On Saturday night, Idaho State handed Montana State an indentical 3-1 setback. This weekend’s matches begin the second-round of Big Sky Conference action. MSU opened the league season hosting UNC and NAU in the middle of September. The Lumberjacks won the first encounter 3-0, while the Bears also took the first meeting, 3-1. On the season, the Bobcats are 3-15 overall and 0-8 in conference play. Northern Colorado is 12-5 overall and atop the Big Sky standings with a 6-2 mark. Northern Arizona is 12-4 overall and 4-4 in league action.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a pair of league matches, last weekend. Weber State handed the Bobcats a 23-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-21 setback on Friday. Jodeen Rademacher paced the Bobcats with 10 kills and 14 digs. Also in double-digits digs were Laura Viren 16, Taylor Faught 14, and Meghan Albiston, 14. MSU recorded 18 block assists, led by Nicole Grypiuk and Kaytlin Van Burger with four, apiece. Saturday, Montana State dropped a 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-15 decision to Idaho State. Rademacher paced the ‘Cats with 12 kills and 14 digs. Albiston guided MSU defensively with 18 digs. The Bobcats had a season-high 25 block assists, led by Kyla Hendry and Viren with six, apiece. Taylor Faught dished out 35 assists in the loss.
The Scouting Report:
The Northern Colorado volleyball squad is 12-5 overall and 6-2 in Big Sky play. UNC holds a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Bears are paced by Kenzie Shreeve, who averages 3.98 kills and 2.33 digs per set. Northern Arizona is 12-5 overall and 4-4 in league play. NAU holds a 23-20 edge in the all-time series. They are led by Lexi Sullivan, who averages 3.93 kps.
‘Cat Chat:
Last weekend, Montana State averaged 16.13 digs per set, well above its season average of 13.55 saves per game...The Bobcats recorded 25 block assists against Idaho State- its most since Nov. 4, 2006 when MSU posted 30 block assists against Weber State...Senior Laura Viren is 34 digs shy of breaking into MSU’s all-time top ten for career digs. She currently has 806 career saves, just shy of Jenny Ohnsorg’s (1992-95) mark of 840 digs...Kaytlin Van Burger and Kyla Hendry are ranked 8th and 9th, respectively, in Big Sky blocks per game at .89 per outing...Laura Viren is ranked 9th in the BSC in aces at .27.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 1-27 overall record and 0-12 home slate last fall, the Bobcats averaged 840 fans per game, which was the best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,287 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. This year, MSU is averaging 844 fans per match, which ranks 39th in the nation.
It’s All Academic:
Montana State juniors Nicole Grypiuk and Kyla Hendry have been nominated for CoSIDA District VII All-Academic honors. Grypiuk, MSU’s lone returning Big Sky All-Academic performer, currently has a 3.51 grade-point.
Player of the Week:
Sophomore transfer Jodeen Rademacher was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Idaho State and Weber State. On the weekend, the 6-0 outside hitter from Adams, Neb., had a pair of double-doubles and averaged 2.75 kills and 3.50 digs per set. Rademacher also added three service aces and two blocks.
Stat of the Week:
Montana State snapped its 14-set losing streak with a 25-23 win against Weber State.
