Montana State Tennis Teams Conclude Fall Season at ITA Regionals

Bobcat newcomer Corey Smith found success in the men’s bracket, advancing to the quarterfinals. The transfer from Florida Atlantic opened the tournament with a straight set (6-4, 7-5) win over Boise State’s Blain Shields.
In his second match, Smith upended UNLV’s Elliott Wronski 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Wronski entered the tournament ranked No. 49 in the nation and No. 2 in the region. Smith continued his strong performance with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 victory over Denver’s David Simson.
Smith’s run finished in the quarterfinal round as UNLV’s Luca Barlocchi won a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 decision.
“Having Corey compete and win at this level is a major breakthrough for his game,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “This is a great sign of things to come for the team this year.”
Smith recently knocked off Thomas Shubert of Brigham Young, 7-6, 6-1, at the ITA All American in the qualifying round, after dropping at 7-5, 7-6 decision to Minnesota’s Sebastian Gallegos.
“The ITA All American is the biggest tournament of the fall,” Phillips said. “Shubert is one of BYU’s top players and will be among the top five returning players in the region, so this is a great win for Corey and the Bobcats.”
Also having a strong regional tournament was sophomore Pawel Turzanski, who defeated Weber State’s Chris Williams, 6-1, 6-0; New Mexico State’s Eduardo Salas, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6; and Montana’s Ray Ramos, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.
“I’m extremely happy with the way our team played this fall,” Phillips said. “We have great team unity, and assuming we stay healthy and have fun, we’ll have a great year.”
On the women’s side, sophomore Stephanie Jasper and junior Laura Villegas competed at the ITA Regional in Salt Lake City.
Villegas, a native of Cota, Columbia, defeated Weber State’s Keya Adamson, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening qualifying round, before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Emily Carbone of Arkansas.
Jasper competed in the main draw where she dropped her opening match 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to Rebecca Row of Tulsa. In the back draw, the Big Sky native defeated Wichita State’s Lenore Lazaroiu 3-6, 6-2, 10-3, and Tulsa’s Jie Zeng 3-6, 6-2, retired. Jasper’s run in the consolation round ended with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Torrie Browning of Wichita State.
