Montana State Harriers Travel to Missoula
10/2/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The meet will be held at the UM Golf Course, beginning with the women’s five-kilometer event at 10 a.m., followed by the men’s eight-kilometer race at 10:30 a.m.
“We have some familiarity with the course from running at the Big Sky meet last season,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “It’s a deceptively tough course as you are either going up or coming down.”
Competing in the open, non-scoring race will be MSU, UM, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Washington State, MSU Billings, Carroll and Great Falls. In all, seventy runners will compete in both fields.
Freshman Heather Haug (Livingston), along with sophomores Morgan Dunley (Wenatchee, Wash.) and Kala Jauquet (Butte) will pace the Montana State women. Haug finished first for the Bobcats at the MSU Invitational, two weeks ago.
“The goal heading into the meet is to reduce our 1-5 split from 29-seconds down to twenty-seconds,” Kennedy said. “It’s going to be a challenge as the course is a smidge longer than the one we ran on two weeks ago; however, I know they are up and everyone is coming off a great week of training.”
Also looking to break into MSU’s top five will be Rebecca Sorenson, Lauren Kuennen, Brooke Chavez, Carey Downey and Katie Gilboy.
Freshman Patrick Casey (Laurel) will guide the Bobcat men’s team, after finishing first for Montana State at the MSU Invitational, two weeks ago.
The Bobcats will be without the services of Matt Adams, Tyler Noland and Matt Beamer, as the trio is nursing injuries. Redshirts Nick Atwood and Graydon Curry will compete this weekend as unattached competitors due to the nature of the open meet.
“It’s the same story as two weeks ago in terms of it being who isn’t running,” Kennedy said. “But, with Atwood and Curry competing, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the team falls in.
“Devin McDowell is coming off a great week,” Kennedy said. “And the rest of the guys are buying into the pack mentality. I think they can develop into a good little team by the Big Sky Conference race.”
Aside from Casey and McDowell, the Bobcats will look to Chris Baldus, Kelvin Daratha, Dan Jackson, Forrest Jarvi and Carl Nystuen to contribute.
