EWU beats Bobcats again

Nichols scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard quarterback sneak, two plays after MSU fumbled a punt return. The Bobcats answered with a 21-yard scoring pass from Cody Kempt to Brandon Bostick. It was Bostick’s team-high fifth touchdown of the season.
Ryan Kelley put the Eagles (3-4 overall, 2-2 in Big Sky Conference) back ahead with a 37-yard interception return.
Just before halftime, Kempt scooped up a bad snap from center and flung the ball to DeSean Thomas in the end zone where the freshman pulled it in to make it 14-all at halftime.
It was the sixth straight time the Eagles have beaten MSU.
The Bobcats (3-4 and 1-2) dominated the opening half, gaining 13 first downs to EWU’s three and totaling 222 yards while holding the Eagles to just 93.
MSU scored first in the second half, as Jason Cunningham, who missed two first half field goals, split the uprights to open the third quarter. The 17-14 advantage was MSU’s only lead of the game.
The Eagles regrouped. Nichols hit preseason All-America wideout Aaron Boyce on an 18-yard score, putting EWU 20-17 after three quarters.
EWU dominated the fourth quarter. Alexis Alexander ran in from 3 yards, making it 27-17 and Nichols hit Brynsen Brown on a 25-yard pass to finish the scoring. EWU held the Bobcats to just 32 fourth quarter yards.
Overall, the Eagles gained 204 of their 297 yards in the second half. On the other hand, MSU had 222 of its 335 total yards in the first half.
Greg Peach, EWU’s preseason All-America defensive end, added to his national-best sack total with three more against the Bobcats who came into the game having yielded just one sack in the last three games.
Nichols finished with season-low 189 passing yards, and had one pass intercepted by MSU’s Arnold Briggs.
Kempt connected on 19 of 38 passes for 248 yards. Thomas was his favorite receiver, catching seven balls for 76 yards. Deon Toliver had a game-high 84 yards on four catches.
The normally strong MSU running game was held to 87 yards, 44 coming from Demetrius Crawford.
The Bobcats travel to Sacramento State next Saturday while EWU has the week off.
