Montana State Cross Country Teams at Idaho State Invite
10/17/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Cross Country
The men’s six-kilometer event will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women’s four-kilometer race at 10 a.m.
Also competing with MSU and ISU will be the College of Idaho. The College of Idaho men’s squad is No. 12 in the most recent NAIA poll, while its women’s team is ranked No. 15.
“This course is one of the most challenging in the country,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “On a scale from one-to-ten, it’s a nine.”
The last time the Bobcats ran on the course was 2003 when MSU captured the men’s Big Sky Conference title.
“It’s very hilly, with wood chips, dirt and sand,” Kennedy said. “I’m eager to see how we respond to the challenge of the course. It’ll be a true test of character.”
The Montana State men’s team, which has been paced this season by freshman Patrick Casey, will get a boost as letterwinners Matt Adams and Matt Beamer will return to the line-up following injuries.
Also looking to contribute will be senior Devin McDowell, who is coming off his best race as a Bobcat at the University of Montana Invitational, two weeks ago.
“This is our last test before the Big Sky meet” Kennedy said. “On paper, this is a race we should get; however, ISU is running on their home course and their kids will be ready.”
The Bobcat women’s team is also the pre-race favorite.
Sophomore Morgan Dunley will lead the Bobcat squad, after placing eighth at the UM Invitational.
“Morgan is coming off the best race of her collegiate career,” Kennedy said. “The strength of this team is with the pack, and they’ve really bought into that mentality.”
Following Saturday’s race, Montana State will compete in the Big Sky championships, Nov. 1 in Portland, Ore.
