Montana State Spikers Win Set, But Fall in Four

“We accomplished three of our goals,” said MSU first-year head coach Sara Schaub. “We played great defense, we attacked more aggressively and we split sets one and two.”
Weber State (13-8, 4-3) opened the match taking an early 7-3 lead, before Montana State (3-14, 0-7) rattled off an 8-2 run to stake an 11-9 advantage. Three consecutive blocks by the Wildcats pushed the score to 13-11, and WSU held the cushion until the Bobcats notched three straight points to tie the set at 17-17 following a Kaytlin Van Burger block.
At 22-all, a Nicole Grypiuk kill and a Weber State hitting error gave the Bobcats a 24-22 advantage. WSU closed to within 24-23, before another Grypiuk winner gave MSU the set victory.
“I thought we played great defense in the first set,” Schaub said. “We played with a lot of heart and were scrappy. We gave ourselves a chance and we took it.”
Set two belonged to Weber State as the Wildcats out-hit MSU .412 to -0.29.
In the third stanza, MSU took an early 4-2 margin, but Weber State answered with a 6-1 run and held the advantage winning the set on a Chelsea Bair kill.
The final set featured 11 ties and five lead changes. With the score tied at 21-all, Weber State finished on a 4-0 run, sparked by two service aces, to win the match.
MSU was led by sophomore Jodeen Rademacher with ten kills and 14 digs, while Grypiuk added nine kills and four blocks.
Defensively, four Montana State players reached double-digit digs led by Laura Viren 16, Meghan Albiston 14, Taylor Faught 14 and Rademacher.
“We averaged 17 digs per set, and that is way above our average,” Schaub said. “We just need to build on this effort against Idaho State.”
Weber State was led by Brittney Bisaillon with 17 kills and seven blocks.
MSU will host Idaho State, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
