After spending the past 26 days away from the friendly confines of Shroyer Gym and traveling more than 3,800 miles the Montana State volleyball team will host a pair of Big Sky Conference matches this weekend. The two matches will mark the end of the first go-around in league play this fall. Montana State is currently 3-13 overall and 0-6 in conference action. Last Saturday, MSU dropped at 3-0 decision at Sacramento State. Highlighting the trip was the play of outside hitters Macy Merrell and Laura Viren. Merrell, a freshman from Orem, Utah, had her best outing as a Bobcat with nine kills, ten digs, three blocks and a .350 attack mark. Viren also notched nine kills, while adding a team-best 13 digs. Weber State won a pair of league matches in Ogden to improve to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in Big Sky action. Idaho State, who plays at Montana on Friday night, is 3-14 overall and 1-5 in league play - its lone win over E. Washington.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats had just one match last weekend, losing to Sacramento State on Saturday night. The Hornets handed MSU a 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 setback at Colberg Court. Highlighting Montana State’s play was freshman Macy Merrell, who tallied a team-high nine kills, while posting a .350 attack mark, ten digs, three blocks and an ace. Senior Laura Viren also chipped in nine kills, while hitting .304 and adding a team-best 13 digs. Setter Taylor Faught dished out 26 assists and added four digs and two blocks. Sophomore libero Meghan Albiston posted 11 digs to give her a team-leading 205 (3.66 dps) on the season. For the match, Sacramento State out-hit the Bobcats .216 to .099. MSU held the advantage in serving with three aces.
The Scouting Report:
The Weber State volleyball team is 12-8 overall and 3-3 in Big Sky Conference action. The Wildcats have won three of their last four matches, including a pair of Big Sky victories last weekend against Northern Colorado (3-1) and Northern Arizona (3-0). WSU is paced this season by Chelsea Bair and Brittney Bisaillon, who average at team-best 3.38 and 2.75 kills per set, respectively. Bisaillon is also the Big Sky Conference’s top blocker, averaging 1.37 stuffs per contest, as well as leading the league with a .372 hitting percentage. Defensively, the Wildcats are paced by Caitlyn Anderson, who is averaging 4.05 digs per contest. Idaho State is 3-14 overall and 1-5 in Big Sky Conference action. The Bengals lone league win was a 3-0 decision over Eastern Washington. Since that victory on Sept. 20, ISU has dropped five straight matches. Idaho State will face Utah Valley and Montana, before facing the Bobcats in Shroyer Gym on Saturday night. ISU is led by Emily Waldron at 2.73 kills per set.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 1-27 overall record and 0-12 home slate last fall, the Bobcats averaged 840 fans per game, which was the best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,287 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. This year, MSU is averaging 820 fans per match, which ranks 42nd in the nation.
It’s All Academic:
Montana State juniors Nicole Grypiuk and Kyla Hendry have been nominated for CoSIDA District VII All-Academic honors. Grypiuk, MSU’s lone returning Big Sky All-Academic performer, currently has a 3.51 grade-point average in education, while Hendry boasts a 3.50 gpa in animal science.
Player of the Week:
Freshman Macy Merrell garnered her first Montana State Player of the Week accolade for her efforts against Sacramento State. The Orem, Utah native had nine kills, a .350 attack mark, ten digs, three blocks, one service ace and one assist against the Hornets. Merrell has played in 43 of 56 sets this fall.
Stat of the Week:
Montana State held a 3-1 advantage at Sacramento State in service aces.

The Bobcats have slated its Nov. 1 contest against Eastern Washington as ‘Dig Pink’ National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally night. Hundreds of teams around the country will be raising funds to help eradicate breast cancer. More details
