Brad Huse opens his third season as Montana State's men's basketball coach by welcoming a versatile, athletic group anchored by returning starter Divaldo Mbunga and featuring six newcomers.
Huse looks forward to the challenge.
"We have lots of training, lots of coaching, ahead of us to get guys on the same page," Huse said. "I'm excited to get things put together, with as many new faces as we have."
Most of MSU's experience returns in the frontcourt. Mbunga, who started at center for the Bobcats a year ago, averaged 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds a game and earned second team All-Big Sky honors.
Branden Johnson returns as a part-time starter at power forward, while sophomore wing players Erik Rush and Danny Piepoli return from a redshirt season. Sophomore Bobby Howard brings experience to the front-line. A pair of newcomers should help up front. Power forward Cameron Henderson, a junior college transfer, is an inside player expected to add scoring punch around the basket, while freshman center Cody Anderson should help in the post.
James Hennessy returns at the point guard position. Most other backcourt spots are up for grabs. Marquis Navarre, and Larry Swann each bring diverse skills to the guard line, each able to handle point guard duties while providing a scoring threat. Freshman Austin Brown brings his diverse offensive skills to the wing, as well, and Trevor Hopkins joins the program as a walk-on point guard.
With as many new faces as he'll have to deal with, Huse said MSU's preseason camp will move methodically. "We'll try to take things slowly and keep it simple," Huse said. "At the same time, it's only two weeks until we play a game, so there is some urgency."
