Montana State coach Rob Ash has called each of MSU’s last three contests “must-win games,” and that likely applies this week when the Bobcats host Big Sky preseason favorite Eastern Washington at 1:05 pm Saturday. The Cats are coming off a home loss to Weber State, while Eastern lost a 19-3 decision in Cheney to Montana.

We stopped the run game of Weber fairly well, got them in third-and-long situations, they just converted. Conversely we got ourselves in third-and-medium situations with our offense and didn’t convert them. That was probably the key.”
...the Bobcats’ passing game: “When we watch the tape we see good protection, it’s not a protection issue. We allowed only one sack to a team that had seven sacks against Montana the week before. I think we’re getting people open, so it’s not about route-running or design, it’s more about execution, making the throw and the catch. Some of it’s mental, it’s a matter of confidence and performance in the game, so we’ll keep working until we find the right combination. I think Cody played really well in the second half. I don’t think he threw the ball real well early in the game, but he played better as he got warmed up.”
...the Bobcats’ ground game: “We ran the ball very effectively against a team that I thought was loaded up against the run schematically. Our guys came off the ball, blocked well, that’s a real bright spot.”
...Weber State: “Eastern Washington is way better than their record, for sure. They had Colorado beat the entire game, then lost at the very end. Portland State made some phenomenal plays on offense and got by them, and they ran into a real buzz-saw with a Montana team that was pretty fired up. (Eastern’s) defensive front is outstanding, all four of those guys are really tough. The quarterback, (Matt) Nichols, and (Aaron) Boyce, the receiver, are legitimately top guys in our conference. Eastern Washington is a very good team.”
