NCAA Releases Graduation Rate Reports

Montana State University student-athletes entering the university during the 2001-02 academic year graduated from the school at a rate just lower than the school’s general student body, according to figures released by the NCAA on Tuesday, although student-athletes exhausting their eligibility at MSU fared exceptionally well.
MSU’s graduation rate stood at 48 percent for all students, while the school’s student-athlete graduation rate was 40 percent - which represents students who entered the university six years ago. Bobcat student-athletes who completed their athletic careers at MSU between 1992 and 2002, however, graduated at a 92 percent rate, according to the report.
Those figures reflect a trend that MSU Athletics has worked hard to reverse in the past several years, MSU Athletic Director Peter Fields said.
“We’ve taken aggressive steps to improve our graduation rates across the board,” Fields said. “We’ve addressed steps in the process ranging from the recruitment and evaluation of prospective student-athletes to our support of those young people after they have exhausted their eligibility. We’ve enhanced our Academic Center and our academic support programs, and while the cumulative effect of these changes won’t be reflected in graduation rates for several years, we strongly believe we’re headed in a positive direction.”
Most reflective of the academic achievement of MSU student-athletes, Fields said, is the department’s cumulative team grade point average, which has been over 3.0 (out of 4.0) for the past 16 semesters. “The vast majority of our student-athletes do the right things,” Fields said. “They work hard in the classroom as well as in practice and games and they do great things in the community.”
The Graduation Success Rate, which also accounts for mid-year enrollees and those transferring in and out of the program, stood at 62 percent in the 2001 cohort.
