Bobcats fall in snow to Weber State

Higgins, a sophomore, connected on 28 of 35 passes, hooking up with Trevyn Smith, Mike Phillips, Tim Toone and Marcus Mailei for scores.
Weber State (2-0 in the Big Sky Conference, 5-2 overall) scored first, when Smith took a short shuffle pass from Higgins and turned it into a 19-yard touchdown midway in the first quarter.
Montana State answered with a 14-yard run by Cody Kempt on a quarterback draw just at the end of the first quarter. Moments later, the Bobcats took the lead when Weber State snapped the ball over its punter’s head for a safety, making it 9-7.
Higgins found Phillips on a 58-yard score off a deflected pass making it 14-9 at halftime. In the third quarter, Smith ran the ball in from the 2 to put 22nd-ranked Weber State up 22-9.
The snow, propelled by a stiff wind from the east, fell throughout the game, coating the field during halftime. But that didn’t slow down Higgins, a native of Hawaii.
Toone caught a season-high 11 passes for Weber State for 130 yards. His score came in the fourth quarter when Higgins hit him from 5 yards out. Higgins finished the scoring with a 5-yard pass to Mailei.
A 25-yard field goal by Jason Cunningham in the fourth quarter was the last of MSU’s scores.
It was a good thing for Weber State that Higgins was as successful as he was. Smith came in the game averaging 95.7 yards a game rushing. The Bobcats held him to 83 yards on 21 carries.
Chase Gazzerro and Bobby Daly combined for 17 tackles for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats dropped to 1-1 in league play and 3-3 overall. Kempt was 13 of 29 for 169 yards. Demetrius Crawford carried 18 times for 75 yards for MSU.
Weber State stunned the Big Sky Conference last week with a 45-28 drubbing off Montana. Saturday’s win marked the first time since 1987 that Weber State beat both the Bobcats and the Grizzlies in the same season.
Weber State plays host to Northern Colorado next week while the Bobcats entertain Eastern Washington.
