The Montana State volleyball team will look to break its 24-match Big Sky Conference losing streak in Missoula on Friday night in Dahlberg Arena. The Bobcats dropped a pair of matches last week, losing to Eastern Washington and Portland State in three sets. The match on Friday night will be MSU’s only contest of the week. The Bobcats are currently in the middle of a four-match road trip, which will culminate at Sacramento State on Friday, Oct. 11 in California. Montana State’s next home match is slated for Oct. 17 against Weber State. The Bobcats hold the all-time advantage in the MSU-UM series 49-42 going back to the fall of 1975. MSU’s last win in Missoula came Oct. 27, 2005 as the Bobcats handed the Grizzlies a 3-1 setback. The match featured 24 digs from former Montana State libero and current UM assistant Kandice Kelly. Montana is currently 6-8 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky action. The Grizzlies dropped both matches last weekend to Portland State and Eastern Washington.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats went 0-2 on its Pacific Northwest trip last weekend. Eastern Washington handed Montana State a 25-14, 25-16, 25-16 setback on Thursday night in Cheney. For the match, MSU hit .033 from the field and commited 21 hitting errors, 11 service miscues, and four reception errors, which accounted for 48 percent of Eastern Washington’s scoring. The Bobcats were paced in the loss by Jodeen Rademacher with eight kills, while junior setter Taylor Faught dished out 18 assists. Defensively, Meghan Albiston and Laura Viren posted eight and seven digs, respectively. MSU’s top blockers were Kyla Hendry and Demi Dlouhy with two apiece. On Saturday night, league-leading Portland State defeated Montana State 25-12, 25-17, 25-13 in the Stott Center. The Bobcat offense struggled for the second consecutive match hitting .047 from the floor. Junior Nicole Grypiuk paced Montana State with a team-high seven kills. Albiston again led the ‘Cats defensively with 11 digs, while Viren added ten. Hendry and Kaytlin Van Burger each tallied a team-high three blocks.
The Scouting Report:
The Montana volleyball team enters Friday night’s match 6-8 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky Conference action. The Grizzlies dropped a pair of matches last weekend, losing to Portland State (25-13, 26-24, 22-25, 25-15) and Eastern Washington (25-22, 27-29, 26-24, 25-13). Against PSU, Montana hit .164 from the floor, but allowed the Vikings a .277 attack mark. UM was led in the loss by Amy Roberts with 15 kills and 11 digs. On Saturday night, EWU out-hit UM .301 to .140 en route to the four-set victory. Roberts again guided the Grizzlies with 15 kills, while posting a team-high 14 saves. On the season, Montana is led by Roberts, who averages 3.14 kills and 2.80 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jaimie Thibeault is chipping in 2.29 kills, while hitting .255 from the field and adding a team-best 1.24 blocks per contest. UM is coached by former MSU assistant Jerry Wagner. Wagner, who is in his third season, has recorded a 28-39 overall mark. Former MSU libero and career digs record-holder Kandice Kelly serves as a UM assistant, as well.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 1-27 overall record and 0-12 home slate last fall, the Bobcats averaged 840 fans per game, which was the best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,287 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. This year, MSU is averaging 820 fans per match, which ranks 35th in the nation.
Player of the Week:
Sophomore Meghan Albiston is Montana State’s Player of the Week after averaging 3.17 digs per set at Eastern Washington and Portland State. The Idaho Falls native posted a weekend best 11 digs in MSU’s 3-0 loss to league-leading Portland State. Albiston also added one service ace.
