The Montana State women’s basketball team will finally return to Worthington Arena, after playing its last three contests on the road, including the Big Sky Conference opener last Friday in Missoula. The Bobcats, who are currently 5-8 overall and 0-1 in league play, will face Sacramento State on Thursday, before Northern Arizona on Saturday night. Last week, MSU dropped a 78-65 decision to Montana. Rebecca Mercer paced the Bobcats with 19 points, while Krislyn Wallace and Nubia Garcia added with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Sacramento State is 3-11 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky play. The Hornets split a pair of BSC games at home, losing to Portland State 81-69, and defeating Eastern Washington 73-70. The win over the Eagles snapped a 14-game Big Sky Conference losing streak. Last week, Sacramento State was paced by Erika Edwards and Sami Field-Polisso, who averaged 14 and 11.5 points, respectively. Northern Arizona is 5-10 overall and 1-1 in BSC games. The Lumberjacks will play at Montana on Thursday night.

Senior Rebecca Mercer led the Bobcats with 19 points, including a six-of-six performance from the free throw line. Also in double-figures were Krislyn Wallace and Nubia Garcia, who notched 13 and then points, respectively. Wallace also posted her first double-double of the season, as she pulled down a team-high ten rebounds. For the game, Montana State shot 39 percent from the field and 80 percent from the charity stripe. The Bobcats also went five-of-17 from beyond the arc. UM won the battle of the boards, out-rounding MSU 40-25. The Bobcats also committed 19 turnovers in the loss.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent, while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 70 percent from the charity line, with Rebecca Mercer leading the way at 79 percent.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 8.85 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 2.85 steals per outing. Perry, a native of Lynwood, Calif., is ranked 41st in the nation in steals per game.
Knit One Pearl Two:
Montana State’s win/loss pattern over the past two years is becoming common place. Last, season, the Bobcats alternated between wins and losses in the last 12 games of the season (i.e., W,L,W,L,W). This season, a new pattern has developed, and could continue with a win over Sacramento State on Thursday. The new run features two four-loss stretches, accompanied by a two-win streak and a three-win streak. To continue the pattern, MSU would need to win its next four games, including two on the road.

Rebecca Mercer was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts at the University of Montana, last Friday night. Mercer guided the Bobcats, scoring 19 points. The Perth, Australia native went five-of-11 fron the field, including a three-of-seven performance from beyond the arc. In additions, she connected on six-of-six from the line. In her last four games, Mercer is 15-of-16 (94 percent) from the charity stripe. In addition to her shooting prowess against the Lady Griz, she added two assists and a steal. On the season, Mercer leads the Bobcats in scoring, averaging 15.9 points per game. She also leads the squad with 29 three-pointers.
Da Wonder From Down Under:
Senior Rebecca Mercer is off to another strong start for the Bobcats. She currently leads the team in scoring (15.9) and is second in assists (2.0). In 12 games to date, she has been in double-digit scoring on 11 occasions, including a career-high 30 points against Utah Valley. Mercer was the 2006-07 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. Her current career scoring average of 13.5 points per game ranks among the top 10 all-time at Montana State.
The Hooper Hoopster:
Senior Krislyn Wallace, a 6-1 forward from Hooper, Utah is one of two MSU captains this winter. Wallace is second on the squad in scoring (12.6 ppg). She paces the Bobcats under the glass, averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. Wallace’s current 6.9 career rebounds per game average is 5th all-time at MSU. She posted a season-high 24 points against Gonzaga. Wallace, a 6-foot-1 junior, transferred to MSU from Eastern Utah.
Diaper Dandies:
Montana State has a pair of true-freshmen making significant contributions to the Bobcat squad. Sarah Strand, a graduate of King’s High School in the Seattle area, has started 11 games and is averaging 10.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In addition, she is first on the team in blocked shots. Lyndi Seidensticker, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane is averaging 14.1 minutes per game. She is averaging 5.2 points and 2.3 rebounds on the season.
Montana Ink:
Montana State signed a pair of high school standouts during the early signing period. Rachel Pauli, 6-1 guard, of Big Timber and Katie Bussey, 5-9 guard, of Alamosa, Colo., have inked to play for the Bobcats next season. As a juniors, Pauli averaged 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Bussey poured in 13.7 points per contest.
