Bobcat Women Fall Short at Montana

Rogers scored a game and career-high 32 points and Montana State (5-8, 0-1) registered 19 turnovers, including 12 in the first half.
“I was proud of our effort ,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “Again, it’s the details and taking care of each possession.
“By no means do we have anything to hang our heads about,” Binford added. “It was the first Big Sky game, and now we’re turning our attention to next week.”
The Bobcats were led in scoring by Rebecca Mercer with 19 points, while Krislyn Wallace and Nubia Garcia added 13 and ten points, respectively. Wallace finished with a double-double posting a game-high ten rebounds.
MSU gave the Lady Griz a new look as Binford changed up the starting line-up-- going big.
The move paid dividends in the early stages as the Bobcats got out to a 5-2 following a Sarah Strand three-pointer and a pair of Mercer free throws.
Montana (11-3, 1-0) quickly answered as Mandy Morales, the Big Sky’s leading scorer, nailed a three-pointer to give UM a 15-9 advantage. Montana pushed the margin to 23-15 at the 8:47 mark on a Rogers trey.
The Lady Griz entered halftime with a 40-29 lead.
Rogers had 17 points at halftime, while Mercer paced the Bobcats with 10 points, including a 6-of-6 performance from the line.
UM opened the second period with an 8-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 48-31 with 15:43 remaining.
However, the Bobcats wouldn’t go away.
Following a ‘gut-check’ timeout by Binford, MSU rattled off nine unanswered points, pulling to within 48-40 at the 12:55 mark on a Mercer trey. The run was sparked by a pair of old-fashion three-point plays by Erica Perry.
Another Rogers 3-pointer stymied the Bobcat momentum and MSU would get no closer.
For the game, MSU shot 39 percent from the field, while the Lady Griz hit at a 44 percent clip. UM also ended with a 40-35 advantage on the boards.
“Our main focus heading into the game was defense and rebounding,” Binford said. “In the first half we were even in rebounding and shooting. We missed some assignments on Rogers, and against a great shooter like that, you’re going to pay the price.”
The Bobcats held Morales to nine points and six assists in 29 minutes of action.
Montana State will host Sacramento State on Thursday in Worthington Arena.
