Second Half Drought Drains Bobcat Women

Montana State (8-10, 3-3) built a 35-23 lead with 1:22 remaining in the first half, before Northern Colorado (10-8, 4-1) rallied to cut the margin to 35-30 at intermission.
MSU took its largest advantage in the second stanza at 55-48 with 11:01 remaining on a Sarah Strand three-pointer.
UNC answered with an 11-2 run, taking its first lead of the second half at 59-57 at the 5:20 mark on a Courtney Stoermer layup. The Bears did not relinquish the lead down the stretch.
Northern Colorado used just six players-- with three athletes playing the entire 40-minutes.
“They out-played us, and out-hustled us,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “This was very uncharacteristic of our team. We need to re-group, learn, and move-on.”
Montana State was led in the loss by Rebecca Mercer with 14 points. Also hitting double-figure were Strand 12, Nubia Garcia 12, and Jenny Heringer 10.
UNC was paced by Danielle Hagen with 29 points and eight rebounds.
For the game, the Bears shot 56 percent from the field, including 65 percent in the second half. MSU connected for 37 percent, and an icy 29 percent in the second stanza.
“Our post defense was ineffective,” Binford said. “We lacked energy and we didn’t compete very hard.”
UNC held a slim 34-32 advantage under the boards. MSU was led by Krislyn Wallace with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Bobcats will host Eastern Washington on Jan. 31.
