MSU Freshman Finishes Strong in Men's Heptathlon

The 11’11.75” vault was enough to give the newcomer a second place in the heptathlon event behind unattached competitor Adam Bork of Missoula. Staven finished with 4713 points, which ranks him currently second in the Big Sky Conference behind Portland State’s Nick Trubachik.
This was Satven’s first outing in a multi-event competition as the majority of high schools in the U.S., including Texas, do not have the event.
“Towards the end of my high school career, my coach told me he thought I’d be good in the multi events and when I came up here to look at the school, these coaches said the same thing,” Staven said. “Getting to pole vault is kind of the fulfillment of a childhood dream for me.”
Staven started strong on Friday winning both the high and long jump giving him the lead in the event going into Saturday morning’s three remaining events. He finished third in the 55 hurdles (8.52) and second in the 1000 (3:04.87).
The women’s pentathlon completed Friday. Bobcat women Kelsey Cooper (sr.) and Amanda DeHaan (jr.) placed third and fourth respectively.
The next meet for the Bobcats is the MSU Open on Jan. 25 at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman. Events start at 4:30 p.m.
