Montana State Rally Falls Short as ISU Women Sneak by Bobcats

Trailing 63-51 with 9:47 remaining, Montana State (8-9, 3-2) went on a 16-4 run to tie the score at 67-all following a Rebecca Mercer layup at the 5:30 mark.
Idaho State (12-5, 4-1) built the margin back to five at 74-69, before the Bobcats answered again, taking a 78-77 advantage on an old-fashion three-point play by Sarah Strand with 1:56 remaining.
In the final 1:30, ISU went 8-of-8 from the line, while MSU converted its only basket on a Mercer layin.
“I’m proud of the way our kids battled,” said MSU Tricia Binford. “They did everything we asked of them.
“When the opponent scores 23 more points from the line than you do, well, that’s tough to overcome,” Binford added.
Idaho State finished the game hitting 28-of-36 from the charity stripe, while Montana State converted five-of-ten.
Mercer paced the Bobcats with 29 points, connecting on 12-of-24 from the field, including four 3-pointers. Also in double-figures were Strand 15, Krislyn Wallace 12, and Nubia Garcia 10.
MSU played in foul trouble for most of the game, as point-guard Erica Perry picked up her fourth foul at the 19:28 mark of the second stanza. Perry and Wallace each fouled out. Perry finished with three points, four assists and two steals.
For the game, Montana State shot 48 percent from the field, while holding Idaho State to 46 percent. The Bobcats also forced the Bengals into 17 turnovers, while only giving up 14 miscues.
Montana State also ended the game with more assists (18), steals (8) and blocks (2).
ISU held a 42-34 advantage under the boards. MSU was led by Garcia with eight rebounds.
MSU will host Northern Colorado on Thursday, Jan. 24 in Worthington Arena.
