MSU Track and Field Newcomer Leads Men's Heptathlon After Day One

The Montana State freshman from Georgetown, Texas took in all in stride as he climbed to the top of the men’s heptathlon after the first day of competition at the MSU Combined Events Invitational at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse Friday. Staven started out slow placing third in the 55-meter dash but promptly turned around and won both the long jump and high jump before placing fourth in the shot put. Staven’s performance accumulated 2855 points on the first day of competition with University of Montana’s Adam Bork in second with 2692. MSU junior Kevin Ludwig is competing in the event unattached. Ludwig is currently in fifth place with 1436 points.
MSU women senior Kelsey Cooley (Missoula) and junior Amanda DeHaan (Belgrade) placed third and fourth respectively in the women’s pentathlon. Cooley, a transfer two-time All-American from D-II Seattle Pacific in the heptathlon, compiled 3437 points including a win in the high jump. DeHaan’s 3220 points included a second in the 55 hurdles and a third in the shot put. The women’s pentathlon was won by Bailey Cox (University of Montana) with 3676 points.
The men’s events resume on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the Fieldhouse. Admission is free.
