The Montana State women’s basketball team will travel to Weber State and Idaho State, this weekend. The Bobcats swept its home series last week, downing Sacramento State (86-58) and Northern Arizona (78-65). MSU’s win over Sac State, snapped a four-game losing streak. This season, the Bobcats are 2-7 away from the friendly confines of Worthington Arena. Weber State is 7-8 overall and 1-2 in Big Sky action, following a road split at Portland State and Eastern Washington. The Wildcats dropped a 64-49 decision at PSU, but rebounded two nights later with a 68-49 victory in Cheney. WSU was led in the two-game road swing by Sara Tuomi, who averaged 15.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Tuomi, a senior from Billings, leads the Wildcats averaging 16.3 points and 3-pointers with 24 makes. Idaho State is 10-5 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play. The Bengals will host Montana on Thursday, before meeting the Bobcats. On the season, ISU is led by Natalie Doma, who averages 23.1 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.
‘Cat Tracks:
Senior Rebecca Mercer sat out MSU’s game against Sacramento State with a foot injury. However, the native of Perth, Australia returned to notch a game-high 20 points against Northern Arizona...Junior Nubia Garcia had a career-night against Northern Arizona. Aside from scoring 13 points, Garcia posted a career-high 13 rebounds and seven assists...Freshman Sarah Strand continues to be one of the top first-year players in the league. The Seattle native averaged 14 points and hit 5-of-10 3-pointers on the weekend...As a team, the Bobcats got the job done at the line this weekend, connecting for 81 percent (38-47). MSU was paced at the stripe by Nubia Garcia, who went seven-of-seven on the weekend.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats swept a pair of home games last weekend. MSU opened with an 86-58 victory over Sacramento State. Playing without leading scorer Rebecca Mercer, four Bobcat notched double-figures led by Krislyn Wallace with 17 points. Also recording double-digits were freshmen Sarah Strand and Lyndi Seidensticker with 12 points, apiece, and Erica Perry with 11 points and six steals. For the game, the Bobcats shot 52 percent from the field. Montana State concluded weekend action with a 78-65 win over Northern Arizona. Mercer returned to the MSU line-up and paced the Bobcats with a game-high 20 points. Junior Nubica Garcia chipped in 13 points and added a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds, while Wallace posted her second double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Strand, a native of Seattle, posted 16 points on five-of-11 from the field. MSU held a commanding 50-37 advantage in rebounding and shot 91 percent (20-22) from the free throw line. The 50 boards were a season-high for the Bobcats against an NCAA Division I opponent.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I level, last year. MSU improved 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign. The Bobcats finished 13-16 last season.
Smart Cookies:
As a team, MSU ranked 4th in the country, academically speaking. The Bobcats had a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.56 and ranked among the WBCA’s top five for the second straight season. MSU had a Big Sky Conference record 11 players on the league’s all-academic list last spring.
Toe The Line:
As a team, Montana State shot 72 percent from the free throw line during the 2006-07 season. Three Bobcats ranked among the Big Sky’s top ten in free throw percentage. Rebecca Mercer led the Big Sky shooting 92 percent, while Nubia Garcia was 9th (.776) and Alyssa Nelson 10th (.763). During the season, Mercer had a stretch of 23 consecutive makes. Currently, the Bobcats are shooting 72 percent from the charity line, with Rebecca Mercer leading the way at 80 percent.
To Catch a Thief:
As a team, the Bobcats lead the Big Sky Conference in steals, averaging 8.80 thefts per game. Sophomore Erica Perry paces the team and the Big Sky Conference, averaging 2.88 steals per outing. Perry, a native of Lynwood, Calif., is ranked 32nd in the nation in steals per game.
MSU Player of the Week:
Wallace played an important role for Montana State as the Bobcats won a pair of Big Sky Conference games. For the weekend, the native of Hooper, Utah averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game, while shooting a whopping 57 percent from the field. In MSU’s win over Sacramento State, Wallace posted a game-high 17 points, connecting on 7-of-11 from the field (64 percent). Against No. Arizona, Wallace posted her second double-double of the year with 11 points and 11 rebounds. For the weekend, Wallace also tallied three assists, three blocks and a steal. She is currently first on the squad in rebounding, averaging 6.6 boards per game.
Da Wonder From Down Under:
Senior Rebecca Mercer is off to another strong start for the Bobcats. She currently leads the team in scoring (16.2) and is second in assists (1.9). In 14 games to date, she has been in double-digit scoring on 12 occasions, including a career-high 30 points against Utah Valley. Mercer was the 2006-07 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year. Her current career scoring average of 13.6 points per game ranks among the top 10 all-time at Montana State.
The Hooper Hoopster:
Senior Krislyn Wallace, a 6-1 forward from Hooper, Utah is one of two MSU captains this winter. Wallace is second on the squad in scoring (12.8 ppg). She paces the Bobcats under the glass, averaging 6.6 rebounds per game. Wallace’s current 6.9 career rebounds per game average is 5th all-time at MSU. She posted a season-high 24 points against Gonzaga. Wallace, a 6-foot-1 junior, transferred to MSU from Eastern Utah.
Diaper Dandies:
Montana State has a pair of true-freshmen making significant contributions to the Bobcat squad. Sarah Strand, a graduate of King’s High School in the Seattle area, has started 13 games and is averaging 10.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. In addition, she is first on the team in blocked shots. Lyndi Seidensticker, a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane is averaging 14.9 minutes per game. She is averaging 5.3 points and 2.6 rebounds on the season.
Montana Ink:
Montana State signed a pair of high school standouts during the early signing period. Rachel Pauli, 6-1 guard, of Big Timber and Katie Bussey, 5-9 guard, of Alamosa, Colo., have inked to play for the Bobcats next season. As a juniors, Pauli averaged 10.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, while Bussey poured in 13.7 points per contest.

The Bobcats have played 15 games this winter, and none have been decided by less than 10 points. MSU’s tightest game was a 79-69 win over Utah Valley. Average margin of victory (+19.3), and defeat (-16.3).
