Montana State Spikers Snap Losing Streak

“We served tougher and passed better,” said MSU head coach Miya Malauulu. “Laura (Viren) and Patti (Anderson) were almost unstoppable, and their effort and hard work paved the way for the rest of the team.”
Viren, a junior from Prior Lake, Minn., finished with a match and season-high 18 kills, while hitting .500 from the floor and adding ten digs. Anderson recorded 12 kills and 11 digs.
Viren was named to the UCF All-Tournament team for her efforts.
Montana State (1-10) dropped its second match on Saturday as Central Florida posted a 29-31, 31-29, 30-22, 29-31, 15-9 win over the Bobcats.
Senior transfer Monique Schaal paced MSU with a team-high 13 kills, while Viren and Anderson added 12 winners, each.
“It was a hard-fought match and it could have gone either way,” Malauulu said. “The thing I’m most happy with is our fight. That has been a consistent over the course of the preseason. Our defense hung tough.
“We need to get back in the gym and get our serve-receive game where it needs to be heading into the Big Sky Conference season,” Malauulu added.
Defensively, Montana State was led by Meghan Albiston with 24 digs, while Anderson and Viren added 19 and 17, respectively. Nicole Grypiuk guided MSU at the net with seven blocks, while freshman Wendy Doutre paced the Bobcats with a .400 attack mark.
Setter Sarah Allen dished out a season-high 55 assists and added nine digs.
UCF (6-5) was led by Stephanie Serna with 21 kills.
Montana State will open league play at Northern Arizona on Thursday.
