MSU Golf Tees Off at CSU Classic

Head coach Brittany Basye has high expectations as she returns six of her top seven golfers from last year’s team. Seniors Kate Steffanich and Stephanie Simmons will lead the experienced crew of Bobcat golfers that includes juniors LaRae Smith, Hillary Folkvord, Tessa Stevenson and Shannon Donegan, sophomore Elsie Nelsen, and freshmen Brittani Jones and Melissa Harring.
Senior Kelly Gillum, who led the Bobcats in scoring last year, will redshirt this year due to shoulder surgery over the summer. “The team is going to miss her competitiveness and scoring,” Basye said. “However, I know she will be contributing from the sidelines.”
Two freshmen round out the new version of Bobcat golf. Jones is a product of Billings Skyview where she was a team captain. Jones placed fifth at 1AA state her senior year and was an Academic All-State selection as well. Harring played four years of high school golf at Brush Prairie, Washington, and was chosen Most Valuable Player on the squad her senior year.
“Brittani is going to be a solid player who can hit the ball and has great touch around the greens,” Basye said. “Melissa had some solid rounds this summer and will contribute to our team.”
The ‘Cats open the season at the Colorado State/Ptarmigan Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado September 10-11. Basye plans to take Smith, Steffanich, Simmons, Folkvord, and Donegan to the meet. Golfers play 36 holes the first day and 18 holes the second. Other conference teams attending the meet are Eastern Washington, Weber State, and Portland State. In all, 20 teams will compete in the two-day event.
“All the girls have played this course except Hillary and I fully expect her to have no problem because she has been hitting the ball so well, “Basye said. “Steffanich is coming off a great finish at the Montana State Amateur tournament this summer, so I think she has great confidence heading into the fall.”
Senior Stephanie Simmons is also beginning her final season along with Steffanich. “Simmons will help lead this group because she has the confidence to go out and play well. We have had some great short game practices and all are fired up and ready to compete,” Basye said.
