The Montana State volleyball team will travel to Orlando, Florida this week for the University of Central Florida Invitational. MSU has never played in Florida; however, it was scheduled to compete at the University of Florida during the 2001 season. The tournament was canceled due to the Sept. 11 terroists attacks. The Bobcats will open play on Thursday against Central Michigan. CMU is currently 6-0 overall and have been led by the play of Kate Fissel and Whitney Evers, who average 5.29 and 4.05 kills, respectively. On Friday, MSU will face a familiar foe in Florida Atlantic. The Owls and Bobcats will be meeting for the third time since 2002. Last year, MSU won 3-0 in the Holiday Inn Classic. FAU is currently 1-5 on the season, with its lone victory over Grambling State. Montana State will play two matches on Saturday, beginning with North Florida. UNF is also looking for its first victory of the fall, after getting out to a 0-6 start. The Lady Ospreys are led by Kavie Sturch, who averages 2.61 kills and 3.00 digs per outing. The Bobcats will face host school Central Florida in the tournament finale. UCF is 2-5 overall and are guided by Schanell Neiderworder, who is averaging 3.00 kills and 1.96 digs.

Miya Malauulu became Montana State’s seventh head coach at the conclusion of the 2002 season. Since then, she has put her own fingerprint on a Bobcat program that has produced four 20-win seasons in the last nine years. Prior to being named head coach, the 1998 graduate of Oregon State University, served as an assistant under Dave Gantt for five seasons. Malauulu came to Bozeman after a successful stint playing for the Beavers. A native of Carson, Calif., she played at OSU from 1994-97. She still holds numerous records at Oregon State and currently ranks fourth all-time in PAC-10 history with 5,368 assists. A two-time OSU most valuable player and an unprecendented four-time Beaver captain, she prepped at Bishop Montgomery High School and played for national club power NIKE-Ichiban, where she garnered USVBA Player of the Year kudos. Malauulu is joined on the bench this season by assistant coaches Erin Naipo and Steve Huntingdale. Naipo, a 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Big Green. She is in her third year at MSU and previously served as assistant coach at Spokane Community College. Huntingdale is in his first season at Montana State, after serving as a volunteer assistant, last fall. Huntingdale is a former Colorado High School Volleyball Coach of the Year (2002, 2003).

MSU will look to snap its seven-match losing streak at the Central Florida Invitational this weekend in Orlando…the Bobcats have dropped 15-straight games…in those 15 games, MSU has surpassed 27 points on five occasions…MSU has had three freshmen on the court at all times…MSU has struggled from the field, hitting just .087…the Bobcats failed to hit above .100 in its three matches last weekend…of its seven opponents to date, five squads are ranked among the top 62 as listed by RichKern.com…MSU has faced #25 Middle Tennessee State and Texas A&M, both of which garnered points in this week’s USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll.
