TEAM NOTES
• Of the 17 games Montana State has played against FBS (formerly I-A) teams in the past 20 seasons, the team’s 403 yards against Texas A&M was the Bobcats’ most recorded since the 440 yards against Washington State in 2001.
• Texas A&M’s 390 yards marked the third straight year MSU’s Big 12 opponent gained less than 400 yards.
• Montana State’s 403 yards last week was the 36th best day in the nation by a Championship Subdivision squad.
• Rob Ash became the sixth straight Bobcat head coach to lose his opener at MSU.
• MSU has lost both of its season opener in the Lone Star State – at Texas A&M this year, and at Texas Tech in 1938.
• Saturday’s crowd of 79,438 was the largest ever to watch Montana State play football. In fact, the 30,005 A&M students in attendance by themselves would mark the eighth-largest crowd ever to witness a Bobcat contest.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES/PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
OFFENSE: QB Jack Rolovich – 6-3, 218, Sr, Novato, CA
Senior quarterback Jack Rolovich posted his most efficient game as MSU’s signal caller, with a 119.82 efficiency rating. Rolovich finished the game 21-for-39, a career-high in completions. He was sacked only twice, and didn’t throw an interception for only the third time in his eight starts at MSU. Rolovich’s 267 passing yards Saturday marked the most by a Bobcat quarterback against a Bowl Subdivision team in the past 20 years.
OTHER NOTES: Two Bobcat offensive linemen – OT Mike Person, OG Chris Smith – made their first career starts at Kyle Field on Saturday… RB Aaron Mason left the game in the first quarter with 20 rushing yards, but Demetrius Crawford (47 yards) and Isaiah Taito (42) gave the team good productivity on the ground… nine players caught passes Saturday, including three different tight ends (Elliott Barnhart, Brandon Bostick and Joe Schreibeis)
DEFENSE: DE Dane Fletcher – 6-2, 231, So, Bozeman, MT
If early indications are representative, Dane Fletcher’s move to defensive end is a success. The sophomore from Bozeman registered five tackles on Saturday at Texas A&M, including two solos, and also logged three tackles behind the line of scrimmage (-8 yards). Fletcher also broke up a pair of passes with hits on Aggie quarterback Stephen McGee.
OTHER NOTES: Cornerback Kory Austin recorded MSU’s only sack Saturday… Jeff Brown and Chase Gazzerro each broke up passes… a pair of true freshmen, safety Jordan Craney and defensive tackle Dan Ogden, played on the Bobcat defense Saturday, joining kicker Michael Sweeney as the team’s three non-redshirt frosh.
SPECIAL TEAMS: LS Tim Garcia – 6-3, 228, Fr, Kamuela, HI
In his first varsity competition at MSU, Tim Garcia successfully executed all 11 of his snaps as the team’s long and short snapper. He converted seven punt snaps, three field goal snaps and one extra point snap.
OTHER NOTES: David Taylor’s 66-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter Saturday was MSU’s longest since Corey Smith returned the opening kickoff of the 2003 Cat-Griz game 90 yards for a touchdown… Eric Fisher missed all three field goal attempts in his debut as MSU’s full-time kicker, but averaged 36.7 yards on seven punts with a long of 52 yards.
