The Montana State volleyball team will play game four of its current five-match home stand against intra-state rival Montana on Friday, Sept. 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Shroyer Gym. The special match time will help accommodate the 22nd Wendy’s/MSU Hall of Fame Induction at 7:30 p.m. in the SUB Ballroom. Headlining the inductions is former Montana State volleyball great Kim Steffel (Duis), who played for the Bobcat from 1989-92. Steffel received the highest honor ever bestowed a Montana State volleyball player when she was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northwest Team in 1992. Her name still remains in numerous catergoires throughout the Bobcat record book. Montana is currently 5-9 overall and 1-3 in Big Sky play after dropping a pair of five-set matches, last weekend. The match will feature a homecoming for Griz assistant coach Kandice Kelly, who played at MSU from 2003-06 and is MSU’s all-time career digs leader. The match will mark the 84th meeting between the two schools, with the Bobcats holding a 43-40 advantage in the all-time series.
From The Pine:
Miya Malauulu became Montana State’s seventh head coach at the conclusion of the 2002 season. Since then, she has put her own fingerprint on a Bobcat program that has produced four 20-win seasons in the last nine years. Prior to being named head coach, the 1998 graduate of Oregon State University, served as an assistant under Dave Gantt for five seasons. Malauulu came to Bozeman after a successful stint playing for the Beavers. A native of Carson, Calif., she played at OSU from 1994-97. She still holds numerous records at Oregon State and currently ranks fourth all-time in PAC-10 history with 5,368 assists. A two-time OSU most valuable player and an unprecendented four-time Beaver captain, she prepped at Bishop Montgomery High School and played for national club power NIKE-Ichiban, where she garnered USVBA Player of the Year kudos. Malauulu is joined on the bench this season by assistant coaches Erin Naipo and Steve Huntingdale. Naipo, a 2002 graduate of Dartmouth College, was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for the Big Green. She is in her third year at MSU and previously served as assistant coach at Spokane Community College. Huntingdale is in his first season at Montana State, after serving as a volunteer assistant, last fall. Huntingdale is a former Colorado High School Volleyball Coach of the Year (2002, 2003).
Cat Tracks:
Monique Schaal recorded 17 kills and three blocks, last week...Against Portland St., she had a team-high 10 kills, while adding five digs and two blocks...Schaal posted seven kills and a .357 attack mark against E. Washington…Kaytlin Van Burger had nine total blocks, including a match-high six blocks against EWU…Patti Anderson recorded three double-digit dig matches, running her streak to seven consecutive in double-figures...Her 4.50 digs per game average was the best on the squad...Laura Viren also collected three double-digit dig matches, ending the weekend with 37 saves…Viren has been in double-digit digs in seven of the last eight matches.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped three matches in Shroyer Gym over the wekend, but they didn’t go down without a fight. MSU opened play against Eastern Washington 34-32, 30-19, 30-24 on Thursday. In the opening set, MSU held six game points, but couldn’t close out with a victory. Sophomore Nicole Grypiuk paced the Bobcats with 11 kills and three blocks, while Patti Anderson added nine kills and 12 digs. Kaytlin Van Burger led MSU at the net with a match-high six blocks, and setter Sarah Allen dished out 27 assists and had nine digs. On Saturday, MSU dropped a 30-22, 30-20, 30-23 decision to league-leading Portland State. Montana State was led by Monique Schaal with ten kills and five digs, while Anderson chipped in seven kills and a match-high 15 digs. The Bobcats faced Utah Valley in non-conference action on Monday. The Wolverines rallied for a 27-30, 30-27, 30-24, 30-27 victory. Anderson paced MSU with a career-high 16 kills, while adding 18 digs. Grypiuk also registered a career-high with 12 kills, while hitting .458 from the floor and posting four blocks. Junior Laura Viren also notched a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Freshman libero Meghan Albiston collected 11 digs and two aces.
Seeing Double:
Senior Patti Anderson and junior Laura Viren have been doubling-up at a consistent clip this season. Anderson has posted nine matches in double-digit digs, including the last seven starts. On the year, the Deer Lodge native has tallied four double-doubles. Viren, an outside hitter from Prior Lake, Minn., leads the team with six double-doubles. In addition, she had notched eight double-digit kill matches and eight in double-figure digs. She has been in double-digit digs in seven of the last eight outings.
Gotta Dig It:
Montana State is averaging 15.96 digs per game. The Bobcats are led this season by freshman libero Meghan Albiston, who is averaging 4.09 saves per game. Last weekend, the Idaho Falls native averaged 3.70 digs per game. Also helping the ‘Cats defensively are Patti Anderson (3.22 dpg), Laura Viren (3.07 dpg) and Sarah Allen (2.09 dpg).
Hard Block Cafe’:
As a team, the Bobcats are averaging 2.27 blocks per game. Last weekend, Montana State out-blocked Utah Valley (8-6), tied with Eastern Washington (10-10) and trailed Portland State (12-7). Junior Kaytlin Van Burger paced all MSU players with 13 blocks for the three matches. She was followed by Nicole Grypiuk 9, and Monique Schaal 8.
Gryp’s Rips:
Nicole Grypiuk was MSU’s Player of the Week. In two matches, she had 20 kills and 5 blocks. Grypiuk averaged 3.33 kills and hit .286 from the field. Her best match came vs. EWU with 11 kills, a .310 attack mark, and 3 blocks.
Looking Ahead:
Following its match against intra-state rival Montana, the Bobcats will close out its current five match homestand against Sacramento State, Saturday, Sept. 6 in Shroyer Gym. Other scheduling notes to be aware of include Northern Colorado on Friday, Oct. 19 (originally Oct. 18). The Nov. 16 match vs. Idaho State has been moved to 5:30 p.m. as part of a double-header with MSU men’s basketball.
